Rain and thunderstorms are expected for most of the holiday weekend, and some storms could be severe.
According to a hazardous weather outlook issued by the National Weather Service, scattered thunderstorms are expected to develop in the region today. Some storms may become severe with damaging winds, locally heavy rain, and isolated hail.
The chances will be higher for severe weather in Central New York.
The chance for severe thunderstorms will be higher on Saturday as a strong cold front moves into the region. Large hail and even an isolate tornado could also occur as a result of the storms.
No watches or warnings have been issued for Luzerne County.
The forecast
The National Weather Service indicated it was 74 degrees as of 6:54 a.m. at the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton International Airport, and a few clouds were reported.
Showers and thunderstorms are likely after 4 p.m. today. Up to a quarter of an inch of rain is possible, and today’s high will be near 86.
Cloudy skies will follow into tonight, along with showers and thunderstorms likely before 1 a.m. Up to a quarter of an inch of rain is possible, and tonight’s low will be around 70.
Showers and thunderstorms will once again be likely after 3 p.m. on Saturday. Some storms could produce gusty winds and heavy rain. Up to a quarter of an inch of rain could fall, with higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. The high will be near 87.
Saturday night will bring a 70 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. Some storms could produce gusty winds and heavy rain, and up to a half an inch of rain is possible. The low will be around 67.
Partly sunny skies will round out the weekend on Sunday, along with a 30 percent chance of showers before 8 a.m. The high will be near 85.
Mostly clear skies are predicted for Sunday night, with a low around 62.
