Learn about Alzheimers on Oct. 5
PITTSTON — Jeffrey Dauber of the Alzheimer’s Association will be at the library from 1 to 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 5 to talk about Alzheimer “Basics.”
Tweens in grades 5 and 6 may come to the library for an activity for the new Tween Hangout Club. The first meeting is from 4 to 5 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 12. Register by calling the library.
Children ages 18 months to 5 years may bring a grownup to the library for a fun story, craft and free play on Monday evenings from 6 to 6:45 p.m. Registration is required by calling the library. The current session concludes Oct. 23.
Tales on Tuesday with Miss Kristin features age-appropriate stories, songs, activities, and free play for infants, toddlers and pre-school age children. Our programs are as follows: Books and Babies – 9:30 a.m. for ages newborn to 18; Terrific Twos – 10:30 a.m. for ages 18 months to 3; Preschool Pals – 11:30 a.m. for ages 3 to 5. Registration is required. Sign-ups are available in the children’s wing or by calling our children’s department at 570-654-9565 ext. 26. The current session concludes Oct. 24.
The library will hold a two-day book sale from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday, Oct. 29 and Saturday, Oct. 30.
The second annual Murder Mystery will be held at 6 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 4 at Cooper’s Waterfront. Tickets are $60 per person and will include a three-course dinner and the show. For tickets, call Noelle at 570-654-9565.
Children ages 3 to 11 may come to the library to “free build” whatever they wish using Lego. This club is free and meetings from 4 to 5 p.m. every Monday.
Roaming Readers Book Club meets at 11 a.m. every Tuesday. Participants get the opportunity to walk listening to an audio book. Each walk lasts 30 minutes. Call the library to register.
Fiber Art Afternoon is held from 1:30 to 3:3o p.m. every Thursday. Participants will bring their own supplies and work on crochet, knitting and felting.
The Friends of the Pittston Memorial Library meet at 6:30 p.m. the fourth Monday of every month. New members are always welcome. For more information, call 570-654-9565.
Lego Club meets Mondays from 4 to 5 p.m. Library provides the Legos, but adult supervision is required and participants are required to help clean up.
Volunteer opportunities are available at the library. Opportunities include helping in the library, or with the Friends of the Pittston Memorial Library group. If interested, fill out a volunteer form at the front desk.
Adult Coloring Club meets at 1 p.m. every Friday and on scheduled evenings.
The Crochet Club meets from 10 to 11:45 a.m. every Tuesday. Participants are asked to bring their own supplies including a hook sized I, J, or K yarn.
Board games for all ages are available at the front desk and can be used anytime.
The 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten Program at the library is free and open to all children in the community from birth to kindergarten. The child will receive a bag with an age-appropriate book to keep in his or her collection.
WEST PITTSTON LIBRARY
Learn to stary organizaed Oct. 2
WEST PITTSTON — Join Karen Blum of Space & Time Professional Organizers at 6 p.m. Monday, Oct. 2 for an information discussion about organization solutions to a busy life. Karen will discuss basic tips and tricks to help participants stay organized.
Throughout October, children can create various forms of slime on the following dates:
• Kinetic Dough Slime — 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 3. This slime stretches but molds like kinetic sand. Participants must bring a set of measuring spoons and a medium mix bowl.
• Crystal Jelly Slime — 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 17. This slime looks like it’s filled with sparkling crystals. Participants must bring a set of measuring spoons and a medium mix bowl.
• Blood Slime — 6 p.m. Monday, Oct. 30. This slime brings with it a whole Halloween celebration. Everyone leaves with their own bag of homemade blood. Participants must bring a medium and large mixing bowl, a set of measuring spoons, baking sheet and a 1-cup liquid measuring cup.
A puzzling program will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Oct. 9. Games include Jenga, Rubik’s Cubes, tangrams, mazes, Sudoku, riddles, crosswords, jigsaw puzzles, brainteasers and more.
Become a spy with the Spy Academy at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 14. Search for fingerprints, identify missing clues, learn to handle dynamite, survive the laser maze, succeed in target practice and make it through the mind fields and crack the codes.
Sewing 101: Autumn Bunting Decor will be held at 6 p.m. Monday, Oct. 16. Participants can sew anything fall related to decorate their homes in time for Thanksgiving. Cost is $5 to attend, and participants must call the library to register.
Local poet Sean Carroll will discuss the baseball inspired poetry “Caught Looking” at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 23. Registration for this program is recommended.
LibLab will be held at 6 p.m. the following Tuesdays:
• Candy Science — Oct. 24. Participants will try to figure out the secrets behind some of the world’s most famous candies. Participants must bring a small clear glass mix bowl, liquid measuring cup, a shallow dish able to hold water, a funnel and a 12-16 oz bottle of soda. As an allergy alert, we will be working with latex balloons.
• Food Fun — Nov. 21. Participants will learn about the mysteries of food such as dyeing their tongues, tie dying a bowl of milk and seeing if they can taste through their nose. Participants must bring a soup bowl and a mirror.
Learn the basics of cross-stitching and hand sewing from 6 to 7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 6. Cost is $5 to attend, and participants must call the library to register.
A block party will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 10 as children can come in and enjoy the library’s vast collection of toys.
Join Maria Jiunta Heck at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 11 as she showcases the various techniques to perk up old furniture and knick knacks.
International Games Day will be celebrated at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 18 as children came and enjoy the library’s vast collection of games.
Kindergarten Readiness programs are offered at 1 p.m. every Friday to help prepare students for pre-k or kindergarten. Participants are to register by Wednesday of each week.
Power Flow Yoga will be held from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays in the basement of Immaculate Conception Church, 605 Luzerne Ave.
WYOMING FREE LIBRARY
Fun-O-Ween party is Oct. 7
WYOMING — The library is hosting a Video Game, Super Hero and Sci-Fi Fun-O-Ween party from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 7 at the Ralph Dailey Memorial Park in West Wyoming. The event will start with a parade from the West Wyoming Borough Building to the park where there will be activity stations, refreshments, door prizes, and Trunk-Or-Treats. Parents can call the library to register children for the event. Once registered, the parents will receive an invitation to the event. The invitation will be used to receive a free book and a chance to win door prizes. The free book giveaway is sponsored by Evergreen Landscaping, Inc. and anonymous donors.
The library is seeking community organizations to sponsor a Trunk-Or-Treat vehicle. Any interested organizations or individuals can call the library to sponsor a vehicle.
Fill-a-bag book sale will be held from 11 a.. to 4 p.m. Friday, Oct. 20 and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 21. Cost is $5 per bag, and the library is also accepting books for the sale.

A representative from the Weinberg Northeast Regional Food Bank will be at the library to register Luzerne County residents age 60 and older in the Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP) from 10 a.m. to noon Monday, Oct. 23. The CSFP provides a box of non-perishable food once a month to qualified individuals. Income qualifications include a monthly gross income of applicants with a household size of one cannot exceed $1,307 or $15,678 per year. The monthly gross income of applicants within a household size of two cannot exceed $1,760 or $21,112 a year. Applicants must bring proof of household income and a current ID with age and current address.
Reading help will be available at the library for children in grades 1 to 4 from 1 to 3 p.m. every Wednesday. Call the library to register.
The Literary Snoops Book Club meets at noon the second Wednesday of east month. Participants are encouraged to bring a bag lunch for the discussion.
