Clarke inducted into honor society

SCRANTON — Kelly Clarke, Wyoming, was among recently inducted into the University of Scranton’s Tau Upsilon Alpha, the national human services honor society.

Zaffuto inducted into honor society

SCRANTON — Brandon Zaffuto, Pittston, was recently inducted into the University of Scranton’s Phi Sigma Tau, the international honor society for students of philosophy.

Klimas inducted into honor society

DALLAS TWP. — Mikayla Klimas, of Harding, was among nine Misericordia University students into the Beta Beta Beta (TriBeta) National Biological Honor Society during an induction ceremony in Sandy and Marlene Insalaco Hall.

Harmanos is award winner

WILMINGTON, DEL. — Lorraine Harmanos, of Duryea, was presented with the 2018 Chromatography Forum Award on April 19 at the Spring Symposium at the Crowne Plaza.

Harmanos has published several articles in scientific journals and written a chapter in the textbook “The Modern Practice of Gas Chromatography.” Retired now, her professional career included positions at Bristol Meyers, ARCO Chemical, Shimadzu, and, locally, the Pocono Downs Laboratory and Sanofi Aventis.

Curtis recognized for research

WILKES-BARRE — Wilkes University student Mariah Curtis, Dupont, from the Jay S. Sidhu School of Business and Leadership was recognized for her research at the 2018 Northeast Decision Sciences Institute annual conference.

Curtis received second place in the undergraduate student poster competition for her study entitled, “How Does Social Media Advertising Relate to CASMAR Social Commerce Framework in Higher Education? A Focus on Social Media Driven Student-Centered Learning.” The research examined the usage of social media in advertising with CASMAR, the theoretical framework for social commerce and branding exposure.

Locals to graduate from East Strousburg

EAST STROUDSBURG — Several Greater Pittston area residents will receive degrees from East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania at separate commencement exercises for undergraduate and graduate students May 4 and 5.

Rhiannon Avvisato, of Avoca,will receive a Bachelor of Arts in Spanish.

John Butera, of Pittston, will receive a Bachelor of Science in Sport Management.

Lori Defazio, of Pittston, will receive a Bachelor of Science in Communication Sciences & Disorders.

Anthony Halat, of Dupont, will receive a Bachelor of Arts in Communication.

Gus Turonis, of Avoca, will receive a Master of Science in Exercise Science.

Elizabeth Zekas, of Harding, will receive a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry.

Happy anniversary

David and Barbara Stefanoski, of Hughestown, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on May 4. The marriage was celebrated with a marriage blessing at Our Lady of the Eucharist in Pittston, and a special dinner on May 5 with their two daughters Barbara Chackan and husband Andrew, of Exeter; and Diane Woelkers and husband Neil, of Hughestown. The family will also take a special trip to celebrate the occasion later this year.
