AVOCA — The Avoca Hose Company has been awarded a $52,850 Community Facility Grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Rural Development division, according to Congressman Matt Cartwright.

The grant will be used to help replace a 14-year-old single engine/ pumper rescue unit with a 2018 Typhoon pumper rescue.

“I’m a strong supporter of federal investments to keep our rural communities safe and strong,” said Cartwright, D-Moosic, in a press release. “It’s our responsibility to ensure our first responders have the equipment and training they need to protect themselves while they do the dangerous work of protecting our families, homes and businesses.”

The Avoca Hose Co. has also received funds from other sources — a $102,640 Local Share Account grant and a $150,000 Volunteer Loan Assistance Program loan.

In addition, the hose company has contributed $97,469 from the sale of its current pumper truck.

USDA Rural Development offers a broad range of programs to improve the lives of rural Americans, the release notes. The agency provides loans, grants, and loan guarantees for housing, health care, and first responder services and equipment as well as water, electric and communications infrastructure.
