WILKES-BARRE, PA (05/20/2019)— Several Greater Pittston residents were among more than 60 Wilkes University students recognized for their achievements during the 2019 Academic Awards Ceremony. The event was held May 17, the evening before spring commencement.
Nicholas Filipek, of West Wyoming, a communication studies major, received the Tom Bigler Scholae Award presented by the Communication Studies department. The Tom Bigler Scholar Award in Communication Studies was established with funds given by the faculty in honor of Tom Biger, faculty member and longtime journalist.
Rachel Lazevnick, of Pittston, a pharmacy major, received the Dance Award presented by the Performing Arts department.
Laura Solomon, of Dupont, a biology major, received the Rosenthal Award presented by the Biology and Health Sciences department. The Rosenthal Award was established by faculty in memory of a former student.
Robert Sperazza, of Pittston, a computer science major, received the Outstanding Senior Award in Computer Science presented by the Mathematics and Computer Science department.
Kyle Gattuso, of Pittston, a finance major, received the Professor Ted Engel Award for Excellence in Finance presented by the Accounting, Finance and Management department. The award is presented in memory of Ted Engel, long-time member of the business faculty and former dean of the business school through a gift from his wife, Elaine.
David Zydko, of Duryea, a sports management major, received the Dean’s Award for Excellence in Sports Management presented by the Marketing, Entrepreneurship, Leadership, Sports Management and Hospitality Leadership department.
