EXETER — The 10th Annual Wyoming Area Scholarship Celebration was held May 23 in the high school gym for the second time due to the overflow attendance in excess of 450 people.

This year was another banner year for awards and over $ 200,000 in local money was awarded to 52 members of the Wyoming Area graduating class and eight Wyoming Area graduates still receiving funds from the Ruth Boorom Melberger fund at Wilkes University which is part of the Wyoming Area Scholarship Program.

Several seniors also received awards through the Luzerne Foundation and the Monsignor Andrew J. McGowan Fund. These awards are in addition to scholarships granted to seniors from colleges and universities. This year, 12 new scholarships were added as well as a 13 and 14 added very near to the date of the celebration.

Each scholarship has its own selection committee which makes the final recipient selections.

The 13th new scholarship was the Heart Award donated by the Borzell family in memory of their son, John Anthony “Beno” Borzell. On the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the Wyoming Area Scholarship program, the Borzell family awarded a special one-time “HEART” award. The recipient, Daniel Wiedl, was selected from the pool of applicants for the John Anthony “Beno” Borzell Scholarship which has been part of this scholarship program since 2012.

The 14th new scholarship was donated through the Luzerne Foundation by an anonymous donor who designated it be awarded to a Wyoming Area graduating senior. An application was devised and Megan Lee was this year’s recipient, selected by the Luzerne Foundation Scholarship Advisory Committee.

The 11th annual Wyoming Area Scholarship Celebration will be held Wednesday, May 20, 2020 in the high school gym.

Rosella Fedor and Juel Anne Klepadlo serve as chairs of this program.
