Chalk the Walks on Tuesday, Aug. 20

“Spreading joy, optimism, and inspiration…through the magical power of sidewalk chalk.”

Chalk the Walks (a project of The Joy Team…thejoyteam.org) is all about spreading joy, optimism and inspiration through the magical power of sidewalk chalk.

The idea is as simple as it was in childhood: write happy messages, have fun doing it, spread some joy while you’re at it.

Reading Railroad with the SWB RailRiders

Every child participating in the program will receive a bookmark. Children ages 4-12 are eligible to participate. As each child checks out and reads a book, the librarian will check off one of the boxes located on the back of the bookmark. Once the child has completed five books, they can turn in their bookmark at the PNC Field Box Office for a free field reserved ticket (based on availability) for the Aug. 20 at 7:05 p.m. game. Bookmarks can be redeemed at the box office on or before the chose game date. Stop by the desk in the Children’s Wing to get your bookmark.

Book it Through Pittston

Join us for our annual 5K run and fun walk through Pittston on Sept. 7. Book It through Pittston is a run and walk for literacy in honor of the Tom & Dianne Tigue Literacy program. Sign up at http://scrantonrunning.com/race-results/ Click under September.

Financial Aid Night

The Pittston Memorial Library will host a free Financial Aid Night on Monday, Sept. 23 at 6 p.m. in the John P. Cosgrove Center. District high school students and their parents are encouraged to attend this informative session to get a better understanding of the student aid process and how best to begin planning to fund their higher education. A student aid expert from the Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency (PHEAA) will be available to provide information and answer questions. Art Afternoon

All are welcome to come to the library Friday afternoons from 1 to 3:30 p.m. for art afternoon. Work on some zen coloring in the library or bring your own supplies and work on some crochet, knitting or felting.

Grammar pencil sale

You asked for them… we got them. A set of five high-quality pencils with common grammar mistakes are just $5 and make a great gift for your favorite lit nerd.

WEST PITTSTON LIBRARY

Book Club

The Literary Snoops Book Club now meets at the West Pittston Library at 12:15 p.m. the second Wednesday of each month. Participants are encouraged to bring a bag lunch for the discussion.

WYOMING FREE LIBRARY

First Ladies’ Signature Presentation

Dr. Francis J. Murray will host a special discussion regarding his collection of signatures of the Presidential First Ladies at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 20. Registration is required and space is limited.

Beer For Books

The Wyoming Free Library will host a “Beer for Books” fundraiser from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 22 at Sabatini’s Bottleshop & Bar, 1901 Wyoming Avenue, Exeter. Tickets are $25 and can be purchased at the library. Each ticket is good for three drinks and unlimited pizza. Raffle and 50/50 tickets can be purchased at the event. Raffle tickets are $2 each or five for $3. Nobody under 21 years of age will be permitted at the event. Empire in Decline will provide musical entertainment. Call 570-693-1364 for more information.

Gertude Hawk candy bar fundraiser

The library is selling Gertrude Hawk candy bars. Available flavors are peanut butter, crispy, caramel, solid milk and dark chocolate. Each bar is $1. All proceeds benefit the Wyoming Free Library.
