PITTSTON – The Greater Pittston YMCA is gearing up for the Second Annual Pedal 4 Pittston Spinathon to benefit facility improvements and to provide scholarship money for children’s summer programs.
The Leap Day event will take place from 6 a.m. to noon Feb. 29 with registration opening at 5:30 a.m. Participants will receive a free t-shirt, coffee and donuts and “Y-mosas” will also be served. The cost is $25.
“We are hoping to raise about $5,000,” said Janelle Drach, Pittston YMCA director, said. “We secured six sponsors, one for each our of spin time totaling six spin hours, that helps get us to the $5,000 goal.”
There are six time slots, one for each hour beginning at 6 a.m. and continuing through 11 a.m. As of press time, the 7 a.m., 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. time slots were closed where the 6 a.m., 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. slots were still available. There are 27 spinning bicycles in the classroom.
“Crossfit Anthracite has been one of our great sponsors and is bringing along a huge crew from their facility to come and spin with us, so they have a whole time blocked out for themselves, so that’s pretty cool,” Drach said. “It’s nice to see that community support for the event.”
According to Drach, a portion of the money will go towards summer scholarships.
“We are planning a pre-K program all through the summer this year which will be something new and we’re looking at doing something school-aged, as well,” Drach added. “It can get expensive in the summertime to get quality care and quality recreation programming and we want to provide for a full day for a full week for 13 weeks. We are trying to offset that for the families that need child care for that time and space.”
A friendly money-raising competition between Pittston Area and Wyoming Area will also be featured for the Spinathon. Three people from each school are pitted against each other to see which school can raise the most money.
“The Spinathon is in its second year and I think it’s going to be a staple of ours because we’ve really enjoyed the camaraderie,” Drach said. “It’s quick and it’s easy and it’s interactive, so we’re excited to get everyone here for it.”
