Brandon Matthews’ road to the PGA Tour hit a speed bump in the past week.

Matthews, who has already earned his tour card for the 2023 season and is in contention for this season’s Korn Ferry Tour points title, withdrew from a Korn Ferry event July 17, then missed the cut in this weekend’s PGA Tour event.

Playing in the 3M Open in Minnesota, an event with a reputation for being favorable for big hitters, a description that fits him, Matthews struggled to consecutive rounds of 78 Thursday and Friday in his latest PGA Tour shot on a sponsor’s exemption.

Matthews is 0-for-3 in making the cut in PGA Tour events while playing on sponsor’s exemptions. He did make the weekend at the U.S. Open, the most prestigious event entry of his career, after qualifying his way into the tournament this year.

Matthews was fifth on the Korn Ferry Tour season points list going into this weekend, but the tour had an event in Missouri, meaning there is a chance for some players to pass him in the standings.

The Korn Ferry Tour is then off until the Utah Championships Aug. 4-7.
