Wyoming Area’s Brady Noone shot an even-par, 36 at Blue Ridge Trail Monday to earn medalist honors when the Warriors were falling to unbeaten Crestwood, 157-180.
By the time the week ended, the Comets wrapped up the Wyoming Valley Conference Class 3A Division title, becoming the first WVC team in any sport this fall to claim a championship.
Wyoming Area, which moved up this season after previously competing in Class 2A, is 7-4 and third in the eight-team division.
Pittston Area won, 173-174, Monday at Fox Hill Country Club when freshman Patrick Ruane shot a 4-over-par, 39 and the team got the balance needed to overcome a 37 by Wilkes-Barre Area’s Mike Hamel.
Matt Mesaris added a 43 to match Wilkes-Barre Area’s second- and third-best scores.
Ethan Owen shot 44 while Mark Korea, Brayden Strucke and Andrew Nocito all shot 46 for the Patriots.
Crestwood, which took the title outright Friday, clinched at least a tie Wednesday it had two players break par during a 148-187 victory over Pittston Area at Fox Hill.
Derek Johnson shot 33 and Owen Blazick 34.
Ruane led Pittston Area with a 43 and Mesaris shot 44.
Second-place Hazleton Area nipped Pittston Area Thursday, 184-187.
Ruane tied Hazleton Area’s Connor Mateo for medalist honors with 42s.
Owen added a 45 for the Patriots (5-8).
GIRLS VOLLEYBALL
Pittston Area became the first team to take a set off of Holy Redeemer’s unbeaten team, winning the first set Wednesday before the Lady Royals rallied to take the next three.
Holy Redeemer needed 14 kills from Kaylee Gryboski and 13 from Olivia Bilbow to get past Pittston Area, 28-30, 25-16, 25-21, 25-19.
Maura Mihalka had 10 digs and three service points for the Lady Patriots.
Emma Rinaldi had six kills and four points while Jess Ostrowski had 10 assists and eight points.
Pittston Area (3-2) started the week with a sweep of host Hanover Area Tuesday.
Evelyn Pourmonir had 13 service points, including 10 on aces, in the 25-5, 25-16, 25-15 victory.
Pourmonir also had four kills.
Emma Rinaldi had 12 points, seven aces and four kills. Oliva Walter added eight points with the help of five aces.
Holy Redeemer also defeated Wyoming Area, sweeping the Lady Warriors, 25-8, 25-7, 25-14, Monday.
The Lady Warriors remained winless through four matches when they lost at home to another WVC unbeaten Thursday.
Berwick defeated Wyoming Area, 25-4, 25-10, 25-9.
Camille Pinterich had 29 points with 14 aces for the Lady Bulldogs.
Katie Rowlands had two kills and Gianna Colarusso had three digs for the Lady Warriors.
GIRLS TENNIS
Wyoming Area defeated MMI Prep, 4-1, in its only match of the week Wednesday.
The Lady Warriors won their third straight to improve to 5-2 in the WVC.
Jocelyn Williams and Ava Vacula won straight-set singles matches, Ella Rau-Morgan Slusser did the same first doubles and Wyoming Area received a forfeit at second doubles.
Pittston Area is 1-5 after being shut out, 5-0, by Tunkhannock and Crestwood in WVC matches Wednesday and Thursday.
