EXETER — Sofia Sabatini took an aggressive approach to seeking out college lacrosse opportunities.
“I was e-mailing a lot of coaches trying to get interest,” said Sabatini, a Wyoming Area senior who plays for the NXT lacrosse club out of Conshohocken.
Once she got a response from Winthrop College, Sabatini began building a connection that led to a visit and to her eventually signing an NCAA National Letter of Intent Wednesday to receive an athletic scholarship from the Division I school in Rock Hill, S.C.
“It was just the best atmosphere for me,” Sabatini said. “I liked the campus the best; the coaches were awesome; everybody I worked with in the administration and the biology department made it feel like home to me.”
With the help of NXT’s recruiting coordinator, Sabatini also wound up with official recruiting visits to Arkon, Mount St. Mary’s and Iona.
“Probably about the spring of 2021 was when I decided I really wanted to play in college and a high level,” Sabatini said. “Then, over that summer and fall, in travel tournaments, I really knew that’s what I wanted to do.”
Winthrop was 3-6 in the Big South Conference and 4-14 overall last season.
