Pittston Area junior Gianna Adams added two major postseason honors last weekend.

Adams repeated as Class 5A Pitcher of the Year on the all-state team selected by the Pennsylvania High School Softball Coaches Association July 7 and was named Player of the Year on the Times Leader’s All-WVC team July 9.

Pittston Area reached a playoff for the Wyoming Valley Conference Division 1 title and the championship game of the District 2-4 Class 5A Subregional.

Adams went 15-2 with 205 strikeouts in 104 innings, surpassing 500 strikeouts for her career along the way. She led the team with five home runs while driving in 23 runs and batting .407.

Pittston Area senior catcher Ava Callahan and outfielder Kallie Booth were named to the Class 5A second team on the all-state squad.

Callahan batted .474 with seven doubles and 18 RBI.

Booth led the team with a .500 batting average, 26 runs scored and three triples while ranking second with eight doubles.

All three made the Times Leader’s All-WVC team along with Pittston Area senior second baseman Bella Giardina and Wyoming Area senior outfielder Jocelyn Williams.

BASEBALL

Pittston Area senior infielder Jeremy Cawley was selected to the inaugural NEPA Baseball Coaches Association All-Regional team.

Cawley was listed among the top 25 Big School players from the combination of Districts 2, 4 and 11.

Joey Granko, a junior infielder, from Old Forge made the Small School team, which is for players from schools in Class 3A, 2A and A.

Cawley, an outstanding defensive shortstop who is headed to National Collegiate Athletic Association Division II Bloomsburg University, led Pittston Area in runs scored, helping the Patriots to runner-up finishes in Wyoming Valley Conference Division 2 and District 2 Class 5A.

Granko tied for the Old Forge led in RBI with 20 in 22 games while ranking second on the team in batting average at .427. He had six doubles, a triple and a home run.

The first-year Coaches Association is made up of 58 coaches from the three Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association districts and has hopes of expanding on the state level next year. Its first project was naming an All-Regional team.

Brian Jardine from District 2 Class 5A champion North Pocono made the announcement of the teams.
