Pittston Area and Old Forge were officially awarded top seeds in softball when District 2 released the baseball and softball pairings for its upcoming district and subregional playoffs Saturday.

Pittston Area, the 2022 state champion, is the top seed in the District 2-4 Class 5A Subregional, a seven-team tournament.

The Lady Patriots (16-1) will host a Thursday semifinal against the winner of a Tuesday quarterfinal that will send West Scranton (9-11) to Shikellamy (11-7).

Old Forge is the top seed in the District 2 half of the bracket for what is technically a District 2-3 Subregional in Class A.

The Lady Devils (14-6) will need to defeat Forest City (0-15) in a Tuesday home game, then the winner between Mountain View (6-13) and Susquehanna (3-16) in a Thursday, 4:30 final at Marywood University in order to reach the District 2-3 championship game May 28 at Marywood at 4:30.

Wyoming Area (10-9) is the fifth seed and will play at fourth-seeded Berwick (13-7) Tuesday at 4:30. A win there would mean a semifinal game, most likely at Lackawanna League Division 1 champion Valley View (17-3) Thursday. Valley View, the top seed, will first need to get past either Dallas or Nanticoke.

BASEBALL

Pittston Area landed a home game while Wyoming Area and Old Forge each wound up with difficult draws in their tournaments.

The Patriots (16-4) are the third seed and will host North Pocono (9-11) in Wednesday’s District 2-4 Class 5A Subregional quarterfinals. A win would mean a Friday semifinal either at Abington Heights (17-3) or home against Crestwood (7-12).

Both Wyoming Area and Old Forge will face top seeds in the semifinals if they get through the quarterfinals.

Wyoming Valley Conference Division 2 champion Wyoming Area (12-9) is at Valley View (9-11) Monday at 4:30. If the Warriors win, they will head to top-seeded Dallas (16-4), unless Tunkhannock (2-17) pulls a major upset in the quarterfinals.

Old Forge (10-9) is the fourth seed in District 2 Class 2A. The Blue Devils host fifth-seeded Holy Cross (7-12) Tuesday at 4:30. The winner goes to top seed and Lackawanna Division 3 champion Mountain View (15-2) Thursday for a 4:30 game.
