Wyoming Area had three of the top five finishers in Class 2A boys Monday when the Wyoming Valley Conference conducted its qualifier for the District 2 Individual Golf Championships.

Defending state champion Nick Werner from Wyoming Seminary ran away from the field with a 7-under-par, 64.

Werner won by 10 strokes, but Wyoming Area golfers occupied three of the next four spots.

Pittston Area had four players advance in Class 3A.

The qualifiers advance to the District 2 Championships, which are Monday at Elkview Country Club.

Wyoming Area’s Aiden August matched par on the front nine and finished second with a 74.

Kristian Pugliese tied Holy Redeemer’s Max Bowen for third with a 76. Robbie Yatsko placed fifth with a 77.

Pittston Area had two of the top four players in Class 3A where Wilkes-Barre Area’s Brady Gerrity was medalist with a 73.

Noah Gruber was second with a 76 and Chris Scavo tied with Charlie Letwinsky from Dallas for third with a 77 to lead the Patriots.

Andrew Nocito and Brady Noone also qualified.

Noone made it through the playoffs that were needed to determine the last players to advance.

In Class 3A six players, including two from Pittston Area, tied for the 16th and final qualifying spot by shooting 84s.

Two Wyoming Area players missed out in a four-way playoff for the last two of 14 available positions.

Nocito was tied for ninth in Class 3A with an 81.

Noone and teammate Kyle Franchetti were among the three players to get through the first hole of the playoff. Noone then won the playoff with a par on 9 while the other two players had bogeys.

Wyoming Area’s Jeremy Layland and Mario Belza each shot 82 to make the Class 2A playoff, but fell short there.

Pittston Area, which earlier earned the right to represent the WVC in the District 2 Boys Team Golf Championships, matched Hazleton Area for the most Class 3A qualifiers with four. Berwick advanced three players.

Lake-Lehman led the way in Class 2A with six qualifiers.

Wyoming Area and WVC champion Wyoming Seminary had three players make it.

Neither Pittston Area or Wyoming Area had a player entered in the girls qualifier where eight from Class 2A and three from Class 3A advanced by meeting the standard of shooting 100 or better.

Tunkhannock’s Hallie Brown, with a 78 in Class 2A, and Crestwood’s Sienna Smith, with an 83 in Class 3A, were medalists.

DISTRICT 2 GIRLS

Old Forge finished fifth out of six Class 2A teams in the District 2 Girls Team Golf Championships Tuesday at Honesdale Golf Club.

The Lady Devils had a three-player team score of 347, led by Mia Fox with a 108.

Tunkhannock shot a 253 to win the Class 2A title and Abington Heights shot 269 to lead the three-team Class 3A field.
