District 2 playoff pairings and schedules in field hockey, girls volleyball and boys and girls soccer will be finalized in the next few days with tournaments in those sports beginning before the week is over.

The regular season is scheduled to end in field hockey Sunday, girls volleyball Monday and soccer Tuesday.

Other than cross country, which is scheduled for Wednesday, the exact dates and matchups are not official, but accurate projections can be made in many cases with the seasons just about complete.

Golf and girls tennis tournaments, both individual and team, are complete on the district level.

Cross country

The championships are scheduled for Wednesday at the Wyoming County Fairgrounds in Meshoppen.

Pittston Area competes in Class 3A, which runs in the morning. Wyoming Area is in Class 2A.

The Class 3A races are set for 9:30 a.m. for boys and 10:30 for girls. The top 10 in each race earn medals. Only the district championship team, plus the five-best individuals from other teams, make the state meet.

The Class 2A races are set for 11:30 a.m. for girls and 12:30 p.m. for boys. The top 20 receive medals. The top two teams, plus 10 other individuals from each race, make it to Hershey.

Field hockey

Wyoming Area earned the top seed in Class A with its 16-0 regular season.

The Lady Warriors will open with a quarterfinal against eighth-seeded Holy Redeemer (3-13). The tournament schedule, announced earlier by the district, calls for the quarterfinal Tuesday, semifinals Thursday and the championship game Oct. 30.

Pittston Area went 11-7 to land a home field as the third seed in the District 2-4 Class 2A Subregional playoffs where it will host Shikellamy (7-11) Monday. The tournament continues Wednesday and Oct. 28.

Girls volleyball

Pittston Area (5-11) and Wyoming Area (4-11) missed the District 2 Class 3A field.

They finished ninth and 10th in the 12-team race for eight berths.

Girls soccer

Wyoming Area was in position to be the top seed in Class 2A heading into Saturday’s season finale against Pittston Area.

If the Lady Warriors hold the first seed, they are likely to host Old Forge in the Oct. 26 quarterfinals. The tournament continues Oct. 30 and Nov. 1.

If Wyoming Area slips behind Lake-Lehman, it would probably host Nanticoke.

The Lady Warriors were 13-2-2 going into Saturday’s game with Pittston Area (1-16).

Pittston Area is likely to be the sixth seed in the District 2-4 Class 4A Subregional, which has been reduced to seven teams after winless West Scranton chose not to participate.

The Lady Patriots are likely to open at third-seeded Williamsport in a tournament scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 26 and Oct. 30.

Boys soccer

Pittston Area (6-10-2) appears headed for the fifth seed and a Friday quarterfinal at Valley View (9-8-1) in Class 3A.

The tournament continues Oct. 29 and 31.

Going into Saturday, Wyoming Area had finished its season 7-11 and was likely to miss the Class 2A playoffs as the ninth-place team.
