JENKINS TWP. — The Pittston Area and Wyoming Area high school ice hockey teams met on Friday, Jan. 22 for the annual Blue ‘N’ Gold Skate Games. In the end, it was a split between the two schools.
In the varsity “Skate” game, Wyoming Area jumped out to a 2-0, first period lead thanks to a pair of goals from David Eifert. Pittston Area, however, came storming back with goals from Nick Scalzo and Joe Langdon in the second period.
In the third and final period, Pittston Area’s Ryan Flanagan would score the game-winner, unassisted, as the Patriots prevailed, 3-2.
In goal, Wyoming Area’s Jacob Urban stopped 27 shots. Pittston Area’s Brandon Walker stopped 29 shots, including a late effort from Wyoming Area.
In the junior varsity “Stick” game, Wyoming Area scored three goals in the first period. Robbie Trottini started the scoring, while Neal Wanko and Patrick Musinski added goals. Nick Perry scored a goal for Wyoming Area in the second.
Joe Katarsky and Matthew Romanowski scored goals in the final period to lead Wyoming Area to the 6-0 win. Chris Hartmann scored the shutout for Wyoming Area, while Pittston Area’s Brittany Rose faced 30 shots.
Proceeds from the night went to Little Eric’s Foundation, an organization set up in memory of former Wyoming Area student Eric Speicher, who passed away due to brain cancer in 2013.
“Everyone who came got their money’s worth,” Wyoming Area coach Bill Weiss said. “It was a great game between two great teams. The place was packed with standing room only. The turnout was wonderful to see.”
