JENKINS TWP. — Pittston Area or Title Town?
When speaking of Little League softball in the area, Pittston Area has certainly made a name for itself over the past several years. Last year, the Pittston Area Senior Softball team won the District 16 title and advanced deep in the state tournament. The 10-11 team won the District 16 title as well.
Add another championship to the list.
The Pittston Area Junior Softball team copped the District 16 championship with a 13-3 win over Nanticoke on Wednesday in a game played at Jenkins Township Little League.The locals won the series opener, 3-1 on Monday, June 20.
After struggling for runs in the opener, Pittston Area exploded for 18 hits. Pitcher Tinsley Sarnak scattered six hits and walked one in her five innings of work to pick up the win. Maddisyn Antal homered to lead a big night at the plate for Pittston Area. The locals got hits out of eight different players.
Kylie Herbert pitched the final two innings without giving up a hit.
Antal finished with a three-hit day, which included her homer and a triple. Brianna Pizzano had four hits, including a double, while Bailey Loyack and Lexi Felinski each had three hits. Loren Gronka had two hits in the win.
In the first game of the series, Pittston Area only produced five hits – two from Herbert and one each from Pizzano, Loyack and Antal. However, the team scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth to secure the win. Herbert pitched all seven innings giving up just five hits.
Nanticoke and Pittston Area were the only teams entered in the District 16 championships.
Pittston Area advances to play Northwest in the Section 5 Junior Softball Championship. The best-of-three series will begin Wednesday, July 6 at Northwest Little League field.

Nanticoke takes title over GP
PITTSTON TWP. — After falling to Nanticoke 10-3 on Sunday, June 19, Greater Pittston played one of its better games to date. The locals, who were in a must-win situation in the three-game series, fell to Nanticoke 3-2 on Tuesday at Pittston Township Little League. Nanticoke locked up the District 12 Major Softball title.
Nanticoke’s Kasidy Slusser starred on the mound, striking out 13 for the win. She also had two hits and two RBI at the plate while scoring the winning run in the sixth inning.
Greater Pittston pitcher Bernadette Lieback struck out five and had a hit herself in the must-win game. Sage Wiedlich doubled. Nikki Dennis and Lexi Borthwick each singled.
In the opening game, Greater Pittston’s Dennis had three singles, while Tiara George tripled. Wiedlich had a pair of singles and drove in two runs.
GWA, West Pittston fall in D31
Greater Wyoming Area and West Pittston each dropped their openers in the District 31 Major Softball bracket.
West Pittston fell to Northwest, 11-2, on Sunday, June 19. GWA, who had a bye in the first round, fell to Back Mountain, 12-1, on Tuesday. The two losses led to a matchup of local teams on Thursday.
Greater Wyoming Area came home with a 12-2 win to eliminate West Pittston.
In Greater Wyoming Area’s final game of the season, Harveys Lake came out on the winning end, 11-6.
