KINGSTON — All but one local tennis player remains following the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association District 2 Tennis Championships.
Last week, Wyoming Area’s Brianna Pizano won the District 2 Class 2A singles title and will move on to states. Pittston Area and Wyoming Area each competed in the doubles portion of the district championships on Tuesday at Kirby Park in Kingston.
The team of Madison Stanton and Breanna Yashkus, of Pittston Area, made a splash in the Class 3A championships prior to facing the third seed in the tournament.
In a pigtail match to start the tournament, Yashkus and Stanton defeated Crestwood’s Kara Grenzberg and Abby Bielecki, 6-1, 6-3. In the first round matchup, North Pocono’s Sarah Tofilska and Sarah Sposito took down the locals, 6-1, 6-1.
Pittston Area seniors Mackenzie Connors and Taryn Whitman were matched up against Kristen Denniston and Gina Nolan of Wallenpaupack. In the pigtail match, the Patriot duo fell to the Paupack duo, 6-1, 6-2.
The Wyoming Area duo of Allison Lampman and Lea Getz, participating in the Class 2A tournament, picked up a first round win over Gabi Popko and Alexis Zaluto of Berwick, 6-4, 7-6 (9). In the final 16 matches, Lampman and Getz were pitted against the seventh seed, Gaba Horchos and Amelia Desiderio of Scranton Prep. In a hard-fought matchup, the locals fell, 6-4, 6-4.
Wyoming Area’s Emily Cheskiewicz and Nina Minelli were eliminated by Coughlin’s Diana Rodriguez and Kira Meager in the play-in match.
Pizzano will compete in the PIAA Championships on Friday, Nov. 4 at Hershey Racquet Club.
