YATESVILLE — Elaina Menichelli is back at Pittston Area, coaching boys tennis just 2 ½ years after playing for the school’s girls team.
The 2015 graduate, who is a sophomore nursing student at Marywood University, is one week into her first season as coach.
Boys tennis is among the spring sports that began official practices Monday. Preparation is also underway in baseball, softball, track and field and boys volleyball.
Menichelli was Pittston Area’s top singles player as a senior when she was a District 2-4 Class 3A Subregional quarterfinalist after entering the tournament as the eighth seed. She was a three-year member of the team, playing second singles as a junior.
At Marywood, Menichelli was a member of the women’s tennis team last fall when the bulk of the sport’s schedule is contested on the college level. She went 1-1 in singles play and made the Colonial States Athletic Conference All-Academic Honor Roll.
Pittston Area struggled through the last two boys tennis seasons, finishing third of four teams in the Wyoming Valley Conference Class 3A Division while going 2-9 in 2016 and 1-9 in 2015.
