Vanessa Shedlock and Jalen Rhodes won individual events Friday night to lead the Wyoming Area girls to a second-place finish out of 14 teams in the first North Pocono Track and Field Invitational.
Shedlock won the 400-meter dash in 59.61 and Rhodes won the 100 in 12.80 seconds.
North Pocono beat out Wyoming Area, 92.6-77.33, for the team title.
Shedlock also took second in the 200 and triple jump and third in the long jump. Rhodes and Mackenzie Nocchi joined her in the top five of the 200.
Shelby Stackouse placed fourth in the 100 hurdles.
Madelyn Resciniti was third in the shot put while Valerie Gerchak (triple jump) and Morgan Coolbaugh (javelin) each placed fourth.
Wyoming Area slipped to 1-2 in the Wyoming Valley Conference when it lost to Hazleton Area, 103-43, Wednesday.
Pittston Area continues to lead the division by a half-meet over Dallas.
Abby Norwillo raised her own school record in the pole vault to 12-6 when the Lady Patriots improved to 4-0 Tuesday with a 122-27 rout of Crestwood.
Pittston Area won all but the closing 1600-meter relay.
Arianna Boccardi won the 1600 and 3200 while Norwillo won the long jump and pole vault.
BOYS TRACK
Pittston Area improved to .500 with Tuesday’s 78-72 victory over Crestwood.
Paul Moska led the way, winning the long jump and triple jump.
Wyoming Area lost to Hazleton Area, 109-37, Wednesday.
The Warriors then placed seventh out of 17 teams Friday night in the North Pocono Invitational.
Steven Yordy was second in the long jump, fourth in the high jump and fifth in the triple jump.
Kayne Burton finished third in the 100 and fifth in the 200. He was also part of the fifth-place 400 relay team.
While his teammates were at North Pocono, Marc Anthony Minichello was competing in the East Stroudsburg University Invitational where he won the javelin.
SOFTBALL
Jess Parente went 3-for-3 with a double and scored one of the runs when Wyoming Area went to Dallas and posted a 2-0 WVC Division 2 shutout Tuesday.
Gwen Glatz threw a five-hit shutout with two walks and four strikeouts.
The Lady Warriors then made it three straight wins since an Opening Day loss when they won, 4-3, at Crestwood Friday.
Winning pitcher Nina Cencetti doubled and drove in three runs when Pittston Area defeated Coughlin, 12-1, in five innings Friday in a WVC Division 1 game.
The Lady Patriots scored six runs in the top of the fifth inning to help finish off the game early.
Morgan Mesaris, who had three hits, and Alexa McHugh, who had two, each doubled for Pittston Area.
Pittston Area (1-4) lost Tuesday, 10-1, at four-time defending division champion Hazleton Area.
BASEBALL
Tyler Jackson and Hunter Ralston combined on a five-hitter and Pittston Area scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh Thursday to defeat Berwick, 2-1, in a WVC game.
The Patriots improved to 3-2 in the league.
Jackson worked 6 1/3, giving up four hits and striking out 10 without walking a batter. Ralston got the last two outs and the win.
Joe DeLucca led the offense, going 3-for-4 with an RBI.
Coughlin ruined Pittston Area’s seventh-inning rally Tuesday with a 6-5 win.
The Patriots scored twice in the top of the seventh to take a 5-4 lead, but the Crusaders answered with two in the bottom of the inning.
Ralston struck out three and did not allow an earned run in two innings.
Kyle O’Fier doubled and drove in a run while Joe Stella doubled and scored.
Two-time defending Division 2 champion Wyoming Area continues to struggle at 2-4.
The Warriors opened the week with a 9-0 shutout win at Nanticoke Monday.
Josh Kopcza and Dylan Melberger combined on a four-hitter. Kopcza struck out six and walked two in six innings. Melberger struck out the side in the seventh.
Cole Keating and Aaron Lee each had two hits and drove in two runs. Mikey Bonita also had two hits and scored twice while Steve Homza doubled and drove in two runs.
Berwick defeated Wyoming Area, 4-2, Tuesday.
Melberger doubled and drove in both runs in the loss. Anthony Nardell went 2-for-2 and scored a run.
Lucas Jurchak struck out seven in five innings, but took the loss.
BOYS LACROSSE
Wyoming Area split two games on the week and held on to the WVC Division 2 lead with a 4-2 record.
The Warriors posted an 11-0 shutout at Tunkhannock Tuesday then lost to Crestwood, 13-8, Friday.
Jacob Urban had five goals and Alex Hawk added four in the win. Sam Greenfield had the other two goals.
GIRLS LACROSSE
Nina Cirelli scored four goals when Pittston Area picked up its first win, beating host Coughlin, 10-6, Wednesday in a WVC game.
The Lady Patriots broke away from a 4-4 halftime tie.
Bailey Jordan added three goals.
The Lady Patriots finished the week at 1-5 with a 9-5 loss to Dallas Monday and a 20-4 loss at Lake-Lehman Thursday.
Cirelli had three goals in the loss to Dallas.
BOYS TENNIS
Pittston Area defeated MMI Prep, 3-2, Tuesday and is 5-2 for second place in WVC Division 1.
Mike Mazurkivich pulled out a 7-5, 7-6 (9-7) win over Doug Genetti at second singles and the Patriots swept the doubles matches against the Preppers.
Matt Costello-Nick Harth and John Romanoski-Matt Holly each won in straight sets.
Wyoming Area improved its league record to 3-6.
Aaron Lewis won third singles and the Warriors swept doubles in Monday’s 3-2 victory over Hazleton Area.
