CARBONDALE – Tyler Mozeleski scored 10 points and grabbed seven defensive rebounds Jan. 27 to help Holy Cross win the Lackawanna League Division 3 boys basketball first-half title with a 53-44 playoff victory over defending all-season champion Mid Valley.
Both teams had gone 5-1 in the first-half schedule.
Mozeleski also had two assists.
The junior forward from Yatesville helped Holy Cross pull away after Mid Valley closed within one for the final time midway through the fourth quarter.
Mozeleski’s post move started a 12-2 run, which he completed by making both ends of a one-and-one with 59.7 seconds left for a 51-41 lead.
Holy Cross out-rebounded Mid Valley, 35-23 overall and 9-2 on the offensive end. Mozeleski led all players in the game in defensive rebounds and was second in total rebounds.
“I was thrilled with the rebounding,” Holy Cross coach Al Callejas said. “We limited them to one shot most of the night.
“I thought Tyler came down with some big ones from the middle of the fourth on.”
Mozeleski had scored 12 points two days earlier when Holy Cross forced the playoff by defeating Carbondale, 67-55.
The Crusaders are the defending District 2 Class 2A champions.
