Scranton Prep won five straight bouts early in the Feb. 3 consolation semifinals to defeat Wyoming Area, 48-27, in the District 2 Class 2A Dual Meet Wrestling Championships at Pittston Area.
The loss left the Warriors with a 1-2 record for the tournament, which had started Jan. 31, and 7-5 mark on the season. It also eliminated Wyoming Area, which finished tied for fifth in the-eight team field.
Scranton Prep went on to place fourth when it lost to Lake-Lehman, 51-24, in the consolation final.
The Cavaliers were 2-2 in the tournament. Ivan Balavage, a senior 195-pounder from Avoca, went 4-0 in the event for Scranton Prep.
Damon Barhight’s first-period pin at 285 pounds put Wyoming Area ahead, 6-0, to start the consolation semifinal.
Scranton Prep moved in front, 30-6, with three pins and two forfeits before Wyoming Area won again.
Pins by Charlie Banashefski (152), Alex Pierce (170) and Jaryn Polit-Moran (182) combined with a decision by Robin Wrobleski (138) to get the Warriors within nine points before their comeback fell short.
Pierce needed just 29 seconds for his pin and Polit-Moran 49 seconds for his.
Balavage received a forfeit win.
Both district dual meet championships went to Lackawanna League schools. Honesdale won in Class 2A and Delaware Valley won in Class 3A.
