The presence of four seniors who are returning starters has Pittston Area girls tennis coach John Connors optimistic about the upcoming season.

Pittston Area was second out of four Class 3A teams in the Wyoming Valley Conference with an 8-5 record. It qualified for the District 2-4 Class 3A Subregional team tournament, but was eliminated in the quarterfinals.

“We hope to have at least a similar record to last year,” Connors said, “and to advance further in districts than last year.”

Abby Connors (no relation to the coach) returns as the number-one singles player. She won a Subregional singles tournament match last season to reach the round-of-16.

Kaityln Connors, the coach’s daughter, is one of the returning senior starters, along with Emily Kraser and Julia Zambetti.

Abby and Kaitlyn Connors will handle the top two singles spots while Kraser and Zambetti likely will form the number-one singles team.

Isabella Lewis, Dana Zuba, Rachel Senese, Amanda Zheng, Marissa Moran, Hanna Farber, Katie Koss, Krishna Patel, Sarah Armitage and Meghan Kapak are others trying to earn spots in the lineup.

The WVC season is scheduled to open Monday.
