District medalist and state qualifier Nicole Zambetti returns along with three other runners who were prominent a year ago in helping Pittston Area finish fifth in the Wyoming Valley Conference regular season, fourth in the conference meet and third in the District 2-4 Class 3A Subregional.
“With a core of the top five coming back, we are looking to build on last year’s season,” Pittston Area girls coach Joe Struckus said. “We have a couple new girls out for the first time this year who could become a big help once they become more comfortable with the workouts and the races.”
Zambetti, who was seventh in the subregional to qualify for the state meet as an individual, is a junior. She is joined by seniors Bailey Loyack and Kiersten Grieco and sophomore Shawna Rodzinak.
Rodzinak was the team’s second finisher at the subregional, placing 18th.
Sophomore Morgan Gromelski and freshman Marissa Gubitoso are the newcomers most likely to make an impact on a team that appears to have the potential to be a contender.
The Pittston Area boys also bring back an experienced lineup.
“I certainly think our boys can have a better record than last year,” Patriots coach Dave Jiunta said.
Senior Dom Angradi was frequently the team’s top runner a year ago and junior Nate Ridgely was the top finisher at the District 2 Class 2A Championships.
Kyle Mlodzienski, who doubles as the goalie on the soccer team, figures to be the team’s third runner.
Junior Peyton O’Boyle and senior Evan Elko are two more returnees from last year’s scoring lineup.
Sophomores David Bulford and Xavier Kuzlosky should figure into the lineup with senior Jimmy Dillon as another possibility.
Pittston Area is scheduled to open its season Saturday in the Cliff Robbins Invitational. The WVC schedule opens Wednesday and the Patriots host their only home cluster meet Sept. 12, which will also serve as senior day.
