Emily O’Brien, Tiara George and Michalie Mazurkivich led the way Thursday when Pittston Area went on the road to pull off a major Wyoming Valley Conference girls volleyball upset.

The Lady Patriots pulled out three close games in a 25-23, 25-22, 23-25, 15-25, 16-14 victory.

Pittston Area entered the match with a 1-6 record. Delaware Valley, the defending District 2 Class 4A champion, came into the day with a 3-1 record.

O’Brien had 12 service points, including six aces, along with five kills and 16 digs. George had 24 assists, 20 points and five aces. Mazurkivich had seven kills, six points and four blocks.

Dallas swept Thursday’s WVC match, 25-19, 27-25, 25-21.

Brandi Sorokin led Wyoming Area with eight kills and five blocks.

Pittston Area 2

Lake-Lehman rallied for an 18-25, 25-22, 14-25, 25-21, 18-16 win in Tuesday’s WVC match.

Syra Reza had 12 kills and four digs for Pittston Area. Tiara George had 42 assists. Emily O’Brien had 11 kills and nine service points. Michalie Mazurkivich had 12 kills and five blocks.

Marissa Kovaleski had 36 assists and two aces when Wyoming Area pulled out a win in Tuesday’s match, 25-21, 25-21, 22-25, 22-25, 15-13.

Lauren Parente and Toni Minichello each scored three goals and assisted another in Friday’s non-league victory.

The Lady Warriors improved to 10-0 overall and have outscored opponents, 73-2.

Kayla Kiwak scored one goal and assisted another to help keep Wyoming Area in a tie for first place in WVC Division 1 with Wyoming Seminary.

Sage Wiedlich had 17 saves for Pittston Area in the Wednesday WVC Division 1 loss.

Toni Minichello and Lauren Parente each had a hat trick and an assist and Wyoming Area posted its fourth straight WVC Division 1 shutout to start the season.

The Lady Warriors allowed just two shots on goal.

Unbeaten Wyoming Seminary got five goals and two assists from Alex Wesneski in Monday’s WVC Division 1 win.

Pittston Area defeated MMI Prep, 15-50, but lost to Hazleton Area, 20-38, and host Crestwood, 26-29, Wednesday.

BOYS CROSS COUNTRY

The Warriors swept Northwest (15-50), Nanticoke (15-50), Berwick (23-32) and host Columbia-Montour Vo-Tech, 15-40, to improve to 7-2 on the season.

Pittston Area 3-0

The Patriots swept in a meet at Crestwood, beating MMI Prep (15-46), Hazleton Area (22-35) and the Comets (27-28).

The Patriots finished 3-7 in the WVC. They placed third out of four teams in the Class 3A Division 1.
