High school roundup: Pittston Area pulls off girls volleyball upset

Emily O’Brien, Tiara George and Michalie Mazurkivich led the way Thursday when Pittston Area went on the road to pull off a major Wyoming Valley Conference girls volleyball upset.

The Lady Patriots pulled out three close games in a 25-23, 25-22, 23-25, 15-25, 16-14 victory.

Pittston Area entered the match with a 1-6 record. Delaware Valley, the defending District 2 Class 4A champion, came into the day with a 3-1 record.

O’Brien had 12 service points, including six aces, along with five kills and 16 digs. George had 24 assists, 20 points and five aces. Mazurkivich had seven kills, six points and four blocks.


Dallas 3

Wyoming Area 0

Dallas swept Thursday’s WVC match, 25-19, 27-25, 25-21.

Brandi Sorokin led Wyoming Area with eight kills and five blocks.

Lake-Lehman 3

Pittston Area 2

Lake-Lehman rallied for an 18-25, 25-22, 14-25, 25-21, 18-16 win in Tuesday’s WVC match.

Syra Reza had 12 kills and four digs for Pittston Area. Tiara George had 42 assists. Emily O’Brien had 11 kills and nine service points. Michalie Mazurkivich had 12 kills and five blocks.

Wyoming Valley West 2

Marissa Kovaleski had 36 assists and two aces when Wyoming Area pulled out a win in Tuesday’s match, 25-21, 25-21, 22-25, 22-25, 15-13.

Nanticoke 0

Lauren Parente and Toni Minichello each scored three goals and assisted another in Friday’s non-league victory.

The Lady Warriors improved to 10-0 overall and have outscored opponents, 73-2.

Wyoming Area 3

Crestwood 1

Kayla Kiwak scored one goal and assisted another to help keep Wyoming Area in a tie for first place in WVC Division 1 with Wyoming Seminary.

Toni Minichello and Lauren Parente also scored.

Coughlin 1

Pittston Area 0

Sage Wiedlich had 17 saves for Pittston Area in the Wednesday WVC Division 1 loss.

Wyoming Area 7

Wallenpaupack 0

Toni Minichello and Lauren Parente each had a hat trick and an assist and Wyoming Area posted its fourth straight WVC Division 1 shutout to start the season.

The Lady Warriors allowed just two shots on goal.

Wyoming Seminary 11

Pittston Area 0

Unbeaten Wyoming Seminary got five goals and two assists from Alex Wesneski in Monday’s WVC Division 1 win.

Lackawanna Trail 0

Kayla Kiwak scored six goals and assisted the other in the Sept. 15 non-league win

Toni Minichello scored the other goal and had two assists.

Ellie Glatz made nine saves for the shutout.

Coughlin swept doubles to win Thursday’s WVC match.

Brianna Pizzano and Bella Scappaticci won for Wyoming Area in the top two singles spots.

Katelyn Wesp scored the game-winning goal in Thursday’s WVC Division 1 game.

Mia Snyder scored a goal and assisted on the other two for the Patriots. Kayleigh Walker had the other goal.

Aleah Kranson scored six goals while Christine Kosco had two goals and four assists in the win.

Tierney Porfirio had a goal and an assist.


Wyoming Area 4-0

Wyoming Area swept Northwest (15-50), Nanticoke (15-50), Berwick (25-30) and host Columbia-Montour Vo-Tech Wednesday.

Pittston Area 1-2

Pittston Area defeated MMI Prep, 15-50, but lost to Hazleton Area, 20-38, and host Crestwood, 26-29, Wednesday.


Wyoming Area 3-0

The Warriors swept Northwest (15-50), Nanticoke (15-50), Berwick (23-32) and host Columbia-Montour Vo-Tech, 15-40, to improve to 7-2 on the season.

Pittston Area 3-0

The Patriots swept in a meet at Crestwood, beating MMI Prep (15-46), Hazleton Area (22-35) and the Comets (27-28).

The Warriors won on the road Friday to improve to 5-2 overall.

Wyoming Valley West won Thursday’s WVC Division 1 game.

Zach Kostik scored the first goal and added an assist in Wednesday’s WVC Division 2 victory.

Eddie Golushka, Nick Belles and Matt Lewis also scored. Riley Gerhardt and Luke Coolbaugh had assists.


Lake-Lehman 168

Wyoming Area 195

Wyoming Area completed its WVC schedule with a 6-5 record to place second out of four teams in the Class 2A Division 3.

Cole Coolbaugh led the Warriors with a 47.

Dallas 142

Pittston Area 184

Nick Scavo’s 42 led the way for Pittston Area.

The Patriots finished 3-7 in the WVC. They placed third out of four teams in the Class 3A Division 1.
