Wyoming Area picks up first two girls tennis wins

Bella Scappaticci pulled out a three-set victory in second singles Friday as Wyoming Area picked up its second Wyoming Valley Conference girls tennis win of the week, 3-2, over Wyoming Valley West.

Scappaticci defeated Claire Capin, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4.

Brianna Pizzano did not lose a game while taking the first singles match. Megan Askew-Abigail Drendall won at second doubles.

Abby Connors and Sarah Armitage won straight-set matches at first and third singles for Pittston Area Thursday.

Crestwood 1

Pittston Area swept singles to take the win Wednesday.

Abby Connors won 6-0, 6-0 at first singles. Kaitlyn Connors wrapped up her second singles win in a second-set tiebreaker. Sarah Armitage overcame losing the first set to win in three sets at third singles.

Dallas won the Wednesday WVC match.

Wyoming Area posted its first team victory of the season Monday.

Wyoming Area remained unbeaten with the help of four Ellie Glatz saves in Thursday night’s WVC Division 1 scoreless tie.

“We had opportunities and we didn’t capitalize tonight,” Wyoming Area coach Erin McGinley told the Times Leader after her team had an 11-4 advantage in shots on goal against the once-beaten Black Knights. “Great, hard-working effort, we just left everything we had on the field.

“I think we were a step off in our offensive routine – shots went just wide of the post and we just missed being at the post by that one step.”

The Lady Warriors trail only Wyoming Seminary, which is unbeaten and untied.

Holy Redeemer 6

Caton Fahey had two goals and two assists to lead Holy Redeemer to Thursday’s WVC Division 1 victory.

Sage Wiedlich had 20 saves for Pittston Area.

Crestwood 4

Pittston Area 2

Visiting Pittston Area made unbeaten Crestwood work for its latest win in Friday night’s WVC Division 1 game.

Katelyn Wesp scored late in the first half and again with 14:45 remaining to give the Lady Patriots a 2-1 lead.

Crestwood scored three times in the final 12:03 to pull out the win.

Caroline Wesp made 16 saves for Pittston Area.

Holy Redeemer 8

Wyoming Seminary 0

Annie Bagnall, a junior from West Wyoming, scored her third goal of the game and 100th goal of her career with 1:16 left in the half to put the Royals up 7-0.

Aleah Kranson’s goal with three seconds left was the only score for Wyoming Area Thursday as its suffered its first WVC Division 2 loss.

Caroline Wesp made 20 saves for Pittston Area in Wednesday’s game, allowing only a goal midway through the second half.

Pittston Area 0

Krystal Haertter and Esa Mendola each scored twice to lead Coughlin to the victory in Monday’s WVC Division 1 game.

PIAA Foundation Meet

Pittston Area’s Nicole Zambetti placed 71st out of 247 runners in the Class 3A race at the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association Foundation Meet, held Sept. 22 on the Hershey Parkview Course that is also the home of the state meet.

Zambetti was one of three Pittston Area entries at the race.

Cameron Marcinkowski led Holy Redeemer to the win during a cluster meet in which it also handed Dallas its first WVC loss since 2015.

BOYS CROSS COUNTRY

Michael Brantley finished 10th in the six-team meet to help the Warriors beat two of the three teams they were scored against Wednesday.

Wyoming Area beat Hanover Area, 26-29, and Meyers, 15-50, while losing to unbeaten Holy Redeemer, 15-50.

North Pocono won Thursday’s match, 25-8, 25-21, 21-25, 25-20.

Emily O’Brien had 19 service points, nine aces and four keys to lead Tuesday’s 25-7, 25-12, 25-13 WVC sweep.

Tiara George had 23 assists and seven points. Emma Coles added 12 points, four aces and three kills.

Delaware Valley 3

Wyoming Area 0

Delaware Valley overpowered visiting Wyoming Area, 25-12, 25-14, 25-6 Wednesday.

Jenna Chackan had seven assists and two kills while Hunter Chervenitski had five digs and a team-high four kills.

Lake-Lehman 3

Brandi Sorokin’s 18 kills and three blocks were not enough for Wyoming Area Monday when Lake-Lehman rallied from a pair of one-game deficits to win, 23-25, 25-22, 20-25, 25-16, 15-10.

Jenna Chackan had 20 assists.
