Pittston Area continued its surge into playoff position by reaching the .500 mark for the first time this season when it swept Meyers, 25-19, 25-16, 25-18, Thursday in a Wyoming Valley Conference girls volleyball match.

The Lady Patriots have climbed into the top eight in the 14-team race for a District 2-4 Class 3A Subregional playoff berth where teams outside the top eight can also qualify if they finish .500 or better.

Pittston Area started the season 0-4 and 1-6, but has swept its last four opponents in three games each and won six out of seven to reach 7-7.

Emily O’Brien had eight kills, seven service points and three aces for Pittston Area. Michalie Mazurkivich had 10 points and four blocks. Emma Coles added seven points, including two aces, and two blocks.

Da’Nayia Ballard had seven kills for Meyers (5-8).

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

Wyoming Area 3

MMI Prep 0

Brandi Sorokin led the way Thursday when Wyoming Area moved back above the .500 mark by going on the road to defeat MMI Prep, 25-18, 26-24, 25-21.

Sorokin had 11 kills, five digs and four aces.

Marissa Kovaleski set up the offense with 17 assists.

Jenna Chackan and Selena Forlenza each had five kills and three aces.

Hunter Chervenitski chipped in with seven digs, three kills and two blocks.

Emilee Shaw had 17 service points, six aces and three kills in Tuesday’s 25-8, 25-12, 25-7 sweep.

Tiara George and Michalie Mazurkivich each added 10 points. George also had 12 assists and three aces. Mazurkivich had five aces and four kills.

Wyoming Area 3

Berwick 0

Brandi Sorokin had 13 kills and Marissa Kovaleski contributed 25 assists in a Wyoming Area’s 25-19, 25-17, 25-19 WVC victory Wednesday.

Selena Forlenza, who also had five aces, and Hunter Chervenitski each contributed six kills and four digs.

GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY

Pittston Area 0-2

Pittston Area’s Nicole Zambetti finished first overall Wednesday in a five-team WVC meet that included unbeaten conference leader Holy Redeemer.

The Lady Patriots, however, fell to Holy Redeemer, 20-39, and Hanover Area, 21-34.

BOYS CROSS COUNTRY

Pittston Area fell to first-place Holy Redeemer, 15-47, and Hanover Area, 26-32, during Wednesday’s WVC cluster meet.

Dominic Angradi led the Patriots, finishing sixth individually in the five-team meet.

Crestwood pulled away from a 2-1 game at halftime in a non-league win on its turf Thursday night.

Aleah Kranson scored for Wyoming Area, on an assist from Sydni Johnson.

Pittston Area 4

The Lady Patriots won on the road in a WVC Division 1 game Wednesday.

Grace Mimnaugh scored twice, Katelyn Wesp had a goal and an assist and Mia Snyder scored the other goal.

Wyoming Area 12

Hanover Area 0

Aleah Kranson scored six goals and assisted on two more Tuesday when the Lady Warriors overpowered visiting Hanover Area on Senior Night at Sobeski Stadium.

Nicole Donvito scored two goals and Tierney Porfirio had a goal and two assists.

Sydni Johnson, Amanda McCormick and Lauren Kelly also scored.

Christina Kosco joined Kranson and Porfirio with two assists. Julie Bonsavage and Brooke Evelock joined Johnson in providing one.

Kranson, Johnson and Kelly all were celebrating Senior Night.

Wyoming Area is 8-1 in WVC Division 2, trailing only Lake-Lehman (10-1).

Kyra Antolick’s second-half hat trick allowed visiting Hazleton Area to post Monday’s WVC Division 1 victory.

Tunkhannock did all the scoring in the first 26 minutes of Wednesday’s WVC Division 1 game.

Gavin Lahart scored two goals and assisted on two more Tuesday to lead the Warriors to the road victory in WVC Division 2 play.

Luke Coolbaugh and Riley Gerhart each had two goals and an assist.

Adam Wisnewski made six saves in the shutout.

Kyle Mlodzienski’s 18 saves were not enough for Pittston Area in Monday’s WVC Division 1 road loss.

Lauren Parente had two goals while Cassidy Orzel had a hand in three goals during Wyoming Area’s Thursday WVC Division 1 victory.

Orzel, who scored a goal, and Kari Melberger had two assists each.

Host Hazleton Area posted the WVC Division 1 shutout Tuesday.

Sage Weidlich made 16 saves in the loss.

Kayla Kiwak and Kari Melberger had the assists.
