WILKES-BARRE – The Wyoming Area Warriors already knew they graduated their entire starting lineup from last season’s team that came within a win of the state boys basketball tournament.
Now, the Warriors know they will also be without what would have been their top returning scorer.
Football and lacrosse all-star Dominic DeLuca, who came out of quarterbacking the championship football season dealing with a knee injury, informed new coach Anthony Macario last week that he would not be playing this season.
Macario, who had been hopeful of adding DeLuca to the mix, said at the Dec. 2 Media Day at Patte’s Sports Bar that he had learned of the final decision.
Different outlook
After leaving the Wyoming Area program he built into a contender, Pete Moses takes over a team with high expectations at Wyoming Seminary.
Moses takes over the defending Wyoming Valley Conference Division 3 and District 2 Class 3A champions with the last two division Players of the Year, Dimitri Gnall and Jeremy Callahan, among four returning starters.
“The cupboard that C.J. Kersey left me is much, much better than the cupboard that I left coach Macario,” Moses said.
Pete Moses said he will still be watching his former team from a distance.
“I’d like to wish the best of luck to coach Macario,” Moses said during the WVC Media Day Dec. 2 at Patte’s Sports Bar. “That program means a lot to me and I’ll be rooting for Wyoming Area every night, except the night that we play.
“There’s a lot of good young boys there and they’re going to be good in a few years.”
Ineligible
The District 2 committee ruled former Pittston Area all-star Leah Hodick ineligible to play for the Riverside girls team this year after determining her transfer was, in its view, for athletic purposes.
Hodick is currently a junior at Riverside. She transferred following her sophomore year at Pittston Area.
