EXETER – Madelyn Resciniti picked up the shot put and discus for the first time as a freshman at Wyoming Area.

Before long, Resciniti was winning events in dual meets and by her sophomore season, she was a District 2 silver medalist.

The fast start in the sport began a process that came to fruition earlier this month when Resciniti gave her verbal commitment to accept academic and athletic scholarships from Duquesne University.

Resciniti made it official, signing with the Pittsburgh-based National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I school this week.

“In my ninth grade season, I had no clue about anything about track,” said Resciniti, who was also on the softball team at the time and had just completed the first of her three seasons as a member of the swimming and diving team. “I did it on a whim.”

That whim soon turned into something serious.

“I saw myself winning more and more meets,” Resciniti said. “As I realized, I was at a different level as some other people and at the top level of the district as a freshman, I realized it was something that I could probably do in college.”

Resciniti, who will begin her senior season as a thrower for the Lady Warriors in the spring, made official recruiting visits to Duquesne and NCAA Division II schools Lock Haven and Bloomsburg along with taking an unofficial look at East Stroudsburg.

The secondary education/English major was sold on Duquesne for a variety of reasons.

“I really liked the city,” Resciniti said. “I had never been to Pittsburgh prior to my visit to Duquesne. I just fell in love with the city.

“I really like the campus and the coaching staff was very, very nice. I really liked the dynamic of the team at the school.”

Resciniti was recruited mainly for her shot put skills, but is also expected to throw the discus and learn the college event, the hammer and weight throw.

As a sophomore, Resciniti finished second in District 2 Class 3A in the shot put. Last season, she was third in the shot put and fourth in the discus at the district meet.
