Pittston Area and Wyoming Area will open the week by meeting in girls and boys basketball games with rivalry trophies at stake.
The girls will play Monday at Wyoming Area in the third annual Tigue-Denisco Trophy Game.
Cassidy Orzel is back for Wyoming Area after her 17-point, seven-steal effort earned her the Tony Denisco Award as Wyoming Area’s Most Valuable Player in last year’s 57-43 win at Pittston Area.
The award remained in the Orzel family. Cassidy’s sister, Addison, had 13 points, 30 rebounds and six blocked shots the year before in a 61-55 victory.
The Tom Tigue Trophy goes to the Pittston Area Most Valuable Player.
A championship cup and the MVP awards were created following the deaths of Denisco, the West Pittston mayor, and Tigue, a state representative from Hughestown, in 2016.
The boys will play Tuesday night at Pittston Area in the 14th annual Eugene R. DeMinico II Game.
The game honors the memory of DeMinico, a 2000 Seton Catholic graduate who earned the Army’s Commendation Medal for Valor for his service in Iraq. The police officer died in a Jenkins Township motor vehicle accident early on Thanksgiving morning, 2005.
Pittston Area and Seton Catholic met in the game until Seton Catholic’s closing in 2007. Wyoming Area-Pittston Area games have taken over since with Pittston Area winning each year until Wyoming Area took the last two games.
Wyoming Area won last year’s game, 46-30.
Andrew Krawczyk, who received his team’s MVP Award in that game, is back for Pittston Area. Krawczyk had seven points, 13 rebounds and five blocked shots in the loss.
Proceeds from the game benefit the Pittston City and Pittston Twp. K-9 Units.
