Greater Pittston wrestlers went head-to-head in an action-filled consolation final in the Wyoming Valley Conference Tournament Jan. 5 at Lake-Lehman.

Robin Wrobleski from Wyoming Area decisioned A.J. Gorto from Pittston Area, 14-11, for third place in the 160-pound bracket.

Pittston Area also had a third-place finisher when C.J. Demark pulled out a 9-7 victory over Jared Banesh at 145 pounds.

Wyoming Area wound up 11th in the team standings and Pittston Area was last in the 13-team field.

Connor Wrobleski was fourth at 138 pounds and Jaryn Polit-Moran was sixth at 195 for Wyoming Area.

John Symons was sixth at 182 for Pittston Area.

Hazleton Area had eight pins in Friday night’s WVC match.

C.J. Demark completed a technical fall with four seconds left in the first period for Pittston Area at 145 pounds.

Nico Solano’s first-period pin at 132 pounds helped Pittston Area pull out the road win in Wednesday’s WVC Division 1 match.

The Patriots benefited from five forfeits, including three in a row for a 36-21 lead with three bouts remaining. Kyle Mlodzienski and John DeLuca then avoided pins to protect the lead.

Mlodzienski lost by technical fall at 195, saving one potential point, then DeLuca clinched the win when he lost just, 5-4, in his 220-pound bout.

BOYS BASKETBALL

GAR 76

Pittston Area 62

Curtis Smith scored 27 points and Will Johnson 24 to lead WVC Division 2 co-leader GAR past Pittston Area in Thursday’s crossover game.

Mike George led Pittston Area with 15 points and was joined in double figures by J.J. Walsh (12), Brennan Higgins (11) and Sevion Leak (10).

The Patriots scored 30 points in the fourth quarter after trailing by 24.

Pittston Area is 4-2 in the WVC and alone in third place of Division 1. The Patriots are 8-4 overall to rank third in District 2 Class 5A where 10 teams are fighting for eight district berths and eventually three spots in the state tournament.

Da’mir Faison, who has committed to Division I New Jersey Institute of Technology, had 20 points and 14 rebounds to lead Hazleton Area in Thursday’s WVC crossover.

Daniel Wiedl’s 13 points led Wyoming Area, which is 1-5 in the WVC and 2-8 overall.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Pittston Area 41

Crestwood 38

Pittston Area played a Division 1 opponent for the first time this season Friday night and won at Crestwood.

Crestwood recovered from an 11-point halftime deficit to tie the game, but Pittston Area recovered to pull out the victory.

Jada Sharp hit two free throws with 18 seconds left to complete the scoring and give the Lady Patriots a three-point lead. Crestwood put Pittston Area back on the line and although the shot was missed, Lily Savoy came up with the offensive rebound with 2.1 seconds let to clinch the win.

Sharp led the way with 14 points and Brooklyn Pedana provided a boost off the bench with her playmaking.

The Lady Patriots are 3-4 in the WVC and tied for third out of six Division 1 teams. They are 6-7 overall and sixth in the eight-team ratings race for seeding position in the District 2 Class 5A tournament.

Northwest jumped out to a 15-2 lead after one quarter of Friday’s WVC crossover game.

Aleah Kranson led the Lady Warriors with seven points.

Wyoming Area is 1-6 in the WVC and 3-9 overall.

Division 2 leader Holy Redeemer, the only remaining unbeaten within the WVC, shut out Pittston Area in the first quarter of Wednesday’s crossover win while scoring 23 points.

Megan Mihalka led the Lady Patriots with six points.

Aleah Kranson scored 11 points and Nicole Silinskie added 10 for Wyoming Area in Wednesday’s WVC loss.

Emily Dunn won the 200-yard freestyle for Pittston Area (2-2).

Olivia Norwillo and Kiersten Grieco led Pittston Area to Wednesday’s WVC victory.

Norwillo won the 200-yard individual medley and 100 butterfly. Grieco won the 50 and 100 freestyles. They were both part of the winning 200 freestyle relay.
