HAZLETON — Wyoming Area freshman Connor Wrobleski decisioned Scranton Prep’s Joe Monahan, 4-3, in the 138-pound Class 2A final Saturday to win a gold medal in the District 2 Individual Wrestling Championships at Hazleton Area.
Wrobleski improved to 32-10 with three wins at the tournament.
After defeating Lackawanna Trail’s Cullen Ratchford by an 18-6 major decision in Friday night’s quarterfinals, Wrobleski advanced to the final by pinning Josh Bonomo at 1:33 of the first period in Saturday morning’s semifinals.
Robin Wrobleski, Connor’s brother, and Jaryn Polit-Moran each reached the finals and finished second. They will join Connor Wrobleski at the Class 2A Northeast Regionals March 1-2 at Williamsport.
The Warriors finished ninth out of 12 teams in the tournament, which was won by Lake-Lehman.
Robin Wrobleski pinned Frankie Scranta from Tunkhannock at 1:32 of the 170-pound quarterfinals. He reached the final with a 7-2 victory over Western Wayne’s Alexander Hollister.
Lake-Lehman’s Nick Zaboski pinned Robin Wrobleski in 4:40 of the final.
Polit-Moran suffered a 1-0 loss to Montrose’s Bryan Ryan in the final after getting there by pinning Lake-Lehman’s Thomas Nalbone in 4:53.
Vincent Bowers won a consolation match at 182, but finished fourth, losing out on a shot to regionals in a 4-1 loss to Montrose’s Marc Avila in the consolation final.
Pittston Area finished last in the 15-team Class 3A field.
A.J. Gorto was the only Patriot to finish in the top six in his weight class, taking fifth at 160 pounds.
Gorto (25-10) lost a pair of one-point decisions, but bounced back to win each time. He defeated Tyler Connor from West Scranton, 10-2, then got past Tanner Smith Coughlin, 9-5, in the fifth-place match.
Kyle Mlodzienski, at 195 pounds, was the only other Pittston Area wrestler to win twice, but he fell short of the top six.
Pittston Area was the only Class 3A team that did not advance a wrestler to Northeast Regionals in Bethlehem.
Hazleton Area won the team title.
