Jakiya Kroon and Katelyn Wesp led the way as Pittston Area finished second to Abington Heights Thursday night in the Class 3A girls standings of the 64th annual Jordan Relays at Scranton Memorial Stadium.
The Jordan Relays combine track’s three traditional relay events plus three medley events where the legs of the relay are different distances.
Pittston Area finished second in two of the traditional relay events, the 4×100 and 4×400 relays.
Kroon and Wesp were on both second-place relays.
Scranton won the 4×100 in 49.90. Jenna Smith and Olivia Norwillo were also part of the Pittston Area team that finished in 50.27.
Giovanna Inamoranti and Nicole Zambetti were on the 4×400 that finished in 4:09.71, a half second behind Abington Heights.
Kroon added a fourth-place finish in the 1200 Sprint Medley while Wesp was part of a seventh-place finish in the Distance Medley Relay.
Abington Heights, the Lackawanna Track Conference Division 1 champion, won three of the events for a total of 50 points.
Pittston Area edged Wallenpaupack, 29-26, for second place and four teams finished within two points of the Lady Buckhorns.

Jenna Smith, Olivia Norwillo, Katelyn Wesp and Jakiya Kroon set a school record by winning the 400-meter relay in 49.8 seconds during Tuesday’s loss to visiting Dallas.
Dallas clinched at least a tie for the WVC Division 1 title by beating Pittston Area which entered the day tied for second place in the division.
Giavanna Innamorati won both hurdles races.
Sisters Nicole and Leah Zambetti added wins in the 800 and javelin.
Wyoming Area 112

Aubriana Marranca won the 1600- and 3200-meter runs and ran a leg on the 3200 relay win as Wyoming Area improved to 4-2 in WVC Division 2 with Tuesday’s home win.
Payton Gallagher won both hurdles races, Valerie Gerchak won the long and triple jumps and Madelyn Resciniti won the shot put and discus.
Kayla Kiwak won the 400 and ran on two of Wyoming Area’s three winning relay teams.
BOYS TRACK AND FIELD
Jordan Relays
Pittston Area finished fifth in the boys standings with 20 points.
Wallenpaupack won with 58 points.
Dominic Angradi, Issac Cavill, Joe Cornwell and Tannon Kraklio finished third in the 1600 relay. Angradi and Kraklio were also part of both Pittston Area relays that placed fourth.

Kyle Mlodzienski won the 800-meter run and was part of the 3200 relay win for Pittston Area during Tuesday’s home WVC Division 1 loss to unbeaten Dallas.

Pittston Area scored four times in the bottom of the sixth inning Thursday to pull out the victory in the game between teams that started the day tied for second place in WVC Division 1.
Nate Baranski was perfect through 4 2/3 innings for Wyoming Valley West before the Patriots started to get to him.
Joe Cencetti doubled in the tying and go-ahead runs in the sixth.
Cole Cherkas pitched a five-hitter, striking out eight and walking one. He allowed just two hits after the second inning and retired 13 straight at one point.
“He kept coming out throwing his off-speed for strikes,” Pittston Area coach Paul Zaffuto told the Times Leader after Cherkas threw 69 of his 94 total pitches for strikes. “He threw his cutter for strikes. He threw his fastball for a strike. He was around the zone all day.
Pittston Area’s Derek Cunius was the only player in the game with two hits.
The Patriots are 7-3 in the WVC, one game behind Hazleton Area with three to play. They are 13-3 overall to lead the race for the top seed in the District 2 Class 5A tournament.

Wyoming Area scored twice with two out in the top of the seventh to take the lead, but Tunkhannock came back with two runs in the bottom of the inning to pull out the win in Thursday’s WVC Division 2 game.
Cole Coolbaugh and Chase Yochem had consecutive one-out singles in the seventh. They both scored when Caleb Graham doubled to center field with two out.
Yochem finished with three hits.

Wyoming Valley West 3
Cole Coolbaugh and J.J. Hood combined on a two-hitter and Wyoming Area scored four times in the top of the seventh inning to pull out a road win in the WVC crossover over the then-Division I co-leader.
Jake Kelleher doubled twice and drove in three runs. Ryan Petrucci went 2-for-2.
Coolbaugh battled through six walks to make it through five innings.
Hood then threw two hitless, scoreless innings to earn the win.

Hunter Ralston threw a three-hitter while providing two hits and two RBI to the offense Tuesday when Pittston Area knocked off Division 2 leader Dallas in a WVC crossover road game.
Ralston tossed a three-hitter with four strikeouts.
Cole Cherkas went 4-for-4 with a home run, double, four RBI and two runs scored.
Kevin Krawczyk had two hits and scored twice.

Pittston Area outhit Berwick, 13-8, Monday but could not overcome the damage of a seven-run top of the second by the Bulldogs in the WVC crossover game.
Joe Cencetti went 3-for-4 with a double and two RBI to lead the Patriots offense.
Devon Markert had a double, single, run and RBI. Andrew Krawczyk, Derek Cunius and John DeLucca also had two hits.
SOFTBALL

Tinsley Sarnak and Jess Skladzien combined on a one-hitter when Wyoming Area won Friday’s WVC Division 2 game in eight innings.
Skladzien struck out four in four hitless, scoreless innings, which opened the door for a Wyoming Area comeback.
Nicole Silinskie doubled in two runs in the sixth for a 2-2 tie. Evan Freeman, who had a double earlier, singled in the winning run in the eighth.
Kate Slusser went 3-for-4 and scored twice. Sarnak also doubled.
The Lady Warriors improved to 4-6 in the WVC, tied for third in Division 2, and 6-8 overall to rank seventh of the ninth teams chasing eight District 2 Class 4A playoff berths.

Hope Jones and Kendra Schultz combined on a two-hit shutout when the Division 2-leading Lady Tigers shut down the potent Pittston Area offense in Friday’s WVC crossover game.
The Lady Patriots had scored in double figures in five straight games and 10 of their last 12.
Alexa McHugh threw a four-hitter and joined Madisyn Antal with the only hits for Pittston Area.
The Lady Patriots, who are second in Division 1, fell to 7-2 in the WVC. They are also second in the District 2 Class 5A playoff race with a 13-2 overall record.

Freshman Tori Para threw a five-inning, no-hitter and led the offense during Tuesday’s home-field WVC Division 1 victory.
Para walked one and struck out five. She also went 2-for-2 and drove in four runs.
Alexa McHugh had two hits, scored twice and drove in a run.
The Lady Patriots finished off the game with a run in the bottom of the fifth.

Tunkhannock defeated host Wyoming Area in five innings in Tuesday’s WVC Division 2 game.
Kari Melberger hit a home run for the Lady Warriors.

Winning pitcher Alexa McHugh doubled, homered and drove in three runs when Pittston Area went on the road Monday and picked up a non-league win.
McHugh struck out 11.

Dominic DeLuca scored five goals and assisted on four others Thursday to lead Wyoming Area to the WVC home-field victory, which clinched a berth in the District 2 Class 2A playoffs.
The Warriors improved to 6-3 in the WVC and 7-3 overall. They are fifth out of 12 teams in District 2 Class 2A, but guaranteed a berth because they are assured of finishing at .500 or better.
F.J. Braccini added three goals and an assist.
Ethan Hosier scored twice while Jake Switzer had a goal and two assists. Matt Benton added two assists and Adam Kelly one.
Riley Rusyn made 16 saves.

F.J. Braccini piled up 10 goals in Wednesday’s WVC win at Tunkhannock.
Riley Rusyn made 15 saves.
Ethan Hosier added three goals and four assists while Jake Switzer had a goal and five assists.

Adam Kelly also scored while Matt Benton had two assists and Enrique Velazquez had one.
