Emma Kelleher scored seven goals, Makenzie Switzer was involved in 10 goals and Cassidy Orzel reached a career milestone in the middle of a well-rounded game Thursday when Wyoming Area handled visiting Pittston Area, 20-6, in a District 2 Class 2A girls lacrosse quarterfinal.
Wyoming Area, the tournament’s top seed, improved to 12-2. The Lady Warriors will host Tuesday’s semifinal against either Scranton Prep (11-3) or Abington Heights (8-6) and will also host Thursday’s final if they advance.
Kelleher’s big game included an assist and seven groundballs.
Switzer scored three goals and assisted on seven others.
Orzel, who finished with three goals and four assists, reached the 100-goal mark for her career. The junior midfielder also won 10 of 12 draws and controlled a team-high eight groundballs.
Sydney Maguire had two goals and two assists while Catie McDonough and Carly Yuhas also scored twice. Megan Beppler had the other goal.
Wyoming Area led 18-1 at halftime.
Lily Savoy and Emily Rinaldi scored twice each for Pittston Area. Julia Emmett and Emily O’Brien each had one goal.
BOYS LACROSSE
Wyoming Area was scheduled to open the playoffs Saturday at Dallas where it was trying to earn a shot at top-seed and defending champion Crestwood in Tuesday’s District 2 Class 2A semifinals.
BASEBALL
Pittston Area went 15-5 and grabbed the top seed in the District 2 Class 5A playoffs.
Pending official announcement by the district, the Patriots appear to have earned a bye into Thursday’s semifinal against the Wallenpaupack-Wyoming Valley West winner.
Wyoming Area finished 11-8 overall and projects to the third seed in District 2 Class 4A for a home quarterfinal Tuesday against Scranton Prep (8-9).
The Class 4A tournament continues with semifinals Thursday.
SOFTBALL
Pittston Area finished the regular season 16-3 and, although final district ratings and playoff pairings were not released as of presstime, the Lady Patriots appeared to have secured the second seed and a quarterfinal bye in the District 2 Class 5A playoffs.
Defending champion Pittston Area is likely to host the North Pocono-Coughlin winner in Friday’s semifinals to try to land a spot in the May 29 final.
Wyoming Area finished 10-9, making it the likely fifth seed in District 2 Class 4A, which would mean a game at Honesdale in Monday’s quarterfinals. The semifinals are scheduled for Thursday with the final set May 28.
