WYOMING – Wyoming Area showed it was ready for its first district final appearance by scoring the first three goals Friday.
Playing in, and winning, its ninth straight district championship game, Wyoming Seminary had the composure to deal with the predicament it was placed in by the Lady Warriors.
Wyoming Seminary used four goals in less than two minutes late in the half to storm into the lead on the way to claiming its latest title with a 6-4 victory in the District 2 Class 2A girls lacrosse final.
Christina Kilyanek scored three goals, Grace Parsons had two goals and two assists and Mia Raineri made five timely saves to stop Wyoming Area’s six-game winning streak.
The loss ended Wyoming Area’s best season ever at 13-3. The Lady Warriors used their strong overall record to land the tournament’s top seed over Wyoming Valley Conference champion Wyoming Seminary, giving them the home field in the final.
With hundreds of fans overlooking Tenth Street Field, Wyoming Area came out flying.
Cassidy Orzel opened the scoring less than three minutes into the game and Emma Kelleher made it 2-0 after 4:29. Orzel scored again with 12:36 left, just before the midway point in the half, for the 3-0 lead.
Wyoming Area protected the shutout and three-goal lead until the final nine minutes of the half when Wyoming Seminary strung together more than half its scoring in the game.
The lead evaporated in 37 seconds when Parsons assisted two Kilyanek goals and scored one of her own.
Paige Parsons then scored off a free position shot for a 4-3 lead that held up into halftime.
After Grace Parsons gave Wyoming Seminary a 5-3 lead, Makenzie Switzer scored off a free position to make it a one-goal game with 18:59 left.
Kilyanek’s third goal, with 12:31 left, closed the scoring.
Raineri made three of her saves in the final 7:03 to protect the lead.
“She was awesome,” coach Catie Kersey said. “She anchored our defense.”
Mary Kate O’Brien made 11 saves to help keep Wyoming Area close.
Wyoming Area 8, Scranton Prep 7
Mary Kate O’Brien made 15 saves and Wyoming Area used balanced scoring Tuesday to get past visiting Scranton Prep in the district semifinals.
Emma Kelleher scored two second-half goals to give Wyoming Area an 8-5 lead with 13:59 left.
Christina DeNaples answered eight seconds later with her third goal to cut the lead to two and Scranton Prep made things interesting with a goal in the final two minutes.
Makenzie Switzer and Cassidy Orzel also had two goals each for the Lady Warriors. Switzer had an assist and four groundballs. Orzel handled six groundballs and controlled 10 of 17 draws.
Catie McDonough had a goal, an assist and three groundballs.
Sydney Maguire also scored, capping a stretch of three straight Wyoming Area goals in the final 6:12 of the half to take a 4-3 lead.
