Wyoming Area graduates Marc Anthony Minichello and Steve Homza were part of National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I championships in their respective sports this spring.

Minichello finished his freshman season as a javelin thrower at the University of Pennsylvania by earning honorable mention status with a 17th-place finish at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Austin, Tex. Wednesday.

Homza was a redshirt freshman reserve outfielder on the Central Connecticut State team that won a game in the NCAA Division I baseball tournament for the first time in school history by going 1-2 at the regional in Fayetteville, Ark.

Minichello’s throw of 66.67 meters (218-8) was one inch out of 16th place and second-team All-American status. His freshman season included the third-best javelin throw in the history of Penn’s program.

Homza, who did not play in any of the postseason games, made his collegiate debut this season at Central Connecticut State. He played in six games and went 1-for-2 with three walks and a run scored.

Central Connecticut State (31-23) won its second Northeast Conference title to make it to the NCAA Tournament.

After an 11-5 loss to host Arkansas, Central Connecticut State defeated California, 7-4, June 1. It was eliminated with a 9-5 loss to Texas Christian University.
