Preparation for fall high school sports in Pennsylvania officially got underway Aug. 5 with heat acclimatization workouts for football teams.

Football teams move into full pads and other fall sports begin official practices Monday. Boys and girls cross country, soccer and golf join in, along with field hockey, girls tennis and volleyball.

Golfers, many of whom have been playing competitively on their own during the summer, move right into competition.

The Wyoming Valley Conference schedules opens for the smaller schools Thursday, including a Wyoming Area-at-MMI Prep match.

Pittston Area joins in with Wyoming Area and the rest of the WVC Aug. 19 for the Tryba Tournament at Fox Hill Country Club.

Girls tennis gets started Aug. 20, including Pittston Area at Berwick and Wyoming Area at Holy Redeemer.

Football teams open their overall schedule Aug. 23 when Nanticoke is at Pittston Area and Mid Valley is at Wyoming Area. The Warriors don’t play their first WVC opponent until going to Northwest Sept. 6.

Rivals meet when girls volleyball opens Aug. 30 with Wyoming Area playing at Pittston Area.

Cross country begins Sept. 4 with Wilkes-Barre Area at Pittston Area. The same day, Wyoming Area and Dallas are at Wyoming Seminary in a tri-meet.

Field hockey also starts Sept. 4, including Wyoming Area at Wilkes-Barre Area and Pittston Area at Dallas.

Girls soccer opens with Lake-Lehman at Wyoming Area Sept. 9 in a Division 2 game between teams that battled for the title last year. Pittston Area opens at home the next day against Hazleton Area.

Boys soccer begins with Pittston Area at Nanticoke Sept. 9. Wyoming Area’s opener is at Lake-Lehman the next day.
