WEST PITTSTON – Wyoming Area got a promising football season off to a perfect start Friday night.
The Warriors opened leads of 28 points in the first quarter and 49-0 by halftime on the way to a 56-13 rout over Mid Valley at Jake Sobeski Stadium.
The start was similar to a year ago when Wyoming Area defeated Mid Valley, 48-7, to open what turned into a perfect regular season.
“We came out and I thought we did exceptionally well on both sides of the ball,” Wyoming Area coach Randy Spencer said. “Special teams executed at a high level and I’m happy that our young – in terms of experience – offensive line came together and played.”
Quarterback Dominic DeLuca had a hand in three touchdowns and Brian Williams two during the first quarter.
The Warriors moved 53 yards in seven plays to open the scoring.
DeLuca ran 22 yards on the second play and 14 more for the touchdown.
Wyoming Area forced a punt and took over in Mid Valley territory at the 45.
Six plays later, DeLuca found Brian Williams in the back corner of the end zone for a 19-yard touchdown. Corey Mruk had runs of 13 and nine yards to help set up the score.
Mid Valley had to punt again after three plays and Williams returned the kick for a touchdown, zig-zagging for 59 yards to make it 21-0.
“I was supposed to take it left,” Williams said. “I saw no room there, so I took it up the middle, busted out right and then just outran everybody.”
DeLuca’s 22-yard touchdown run increased the lead to 28-0.
Defense helped build the lead to 49-0 at halftime and ensure the entire second half would be played under the Mercy Rule.
Mruk ran 16 yards for the first score of the second quarter.
Then, Jacob Williams picked off a Patrick Ferke pass and scored on a 30-yard return.
Brian Williams got his third touchdown on a 1-yard run with 1:13 left in the half, before Mid Valley even had its initial first down.
Richie Hyzinski scored on a 9-yard run in the third quarter to build the lead to 56-0 before Mid Valley scored a pair of fourth-quarter touchdowns.
