Kevin Curry returns to his alma mater to try to turn around a struggling Pittston Area boys soccer team that won just two games a year ago.
Since his playing days with the Patriots, Curry has coached youth soccer in Arizona and closer to home. This will be his first high school coaching assignment.
“We hope to improve our offense throughout the season,” Curry said. “I would like to develop our younger talent while giving seniors a chance at districts.”
Significant improvement would be required to reach that goal.
Pittston Area was 2-14-1 last year when it finished eighth out of nine teams in Division 1 of the Wyoming Valley Conference and 12th out of 14 teams in the race for eight District 2 Class 3A playoff berths.
Senior midfielder Bryan Rowan, senior defenders Jake Black and David Butler and junior forward Josh Noone all return to the starting lineup.
Senior defender Kris Vanesko, senior forward Derek Cunius, senior goalie Charlie Dudek and junior defender Josh Gustinucci also have some varsity experience.
The newcomers to the starting lineup are sophomore midfielders Matt Jasienski and Kevin Talipan, sophomore defender Nick Lombardo and freshman midfielder Jose Ortiz.
The Patriots open WVC Division 1 play Monday at Nanticoke.
