BOYS CROSS COUNTRY

Wyoming Area 2-0

Michael Branley and Jacob Katulka finished 1-2 Wednesday as Wyoming Area opened the Wyoming Valley Conference season by beating Dallas, 24-31, and host Wyoming Seminary, 19-39.

The loss was just the third in the last 139 conference meets for Dallas.

“Last year it was very close, so we knew coming into this year that it was going to be the same thing,” Wyoming Area coach Kristen Lombardo said. “Everyone really stepped up.”

Branley ran the 3.1-mile course in 17:43.

Katulka beat out the first Dallas runner by four seconds to take second in 18:13.

Kyle Emsley was sixth in the tri-meet in 19:08. George Sharkey, who missed the season-opening Cliff Robbins Invitational while continuing his recovery from injury, placed eighth while running a 19:30 in his first meet.

“That was huge for us,” Lombardo said. “If he didn’t run, if he didn’t step up and try to compete for his team, we probably would have lost.”

Sharkey’s finish clinched the victory as long as any other Warrior reached the finish line. Dallas took the next three spots, so it would have edged Wyoming Area by one without Sharkey placing where he did.

“It gives us a ton of confidence, coming off that Dallas win,” Lombardo said.
