Wyoming Area’s Brianna Pizzano and Bella Scappaticci reached the final of the District 2 Class 2A girls tennis doubles tournament for the second straight year before again settling for a silver medal.

Second-seeded Ella Krypel-Nicole Joanlanne from Wyoming Seminary defeated top-seeded Pizzano-Scappaticci, 7-6 (7-5), 6-1, in Thursday’s championship match at the Kingston Indoor Tennis Club.

The district final appearance was the sixth of Pizzano’s career. She won singles as a freshman and sophomore and reached both the singles and doubles finals in her junior and senior seasons.

Pizzano-Scappaticci rolled through the first three rounds Tuesday at Kirby Park, winning 36 of 38 games.

The Wyoming Area team topped Riverside’s Emily Taylor-Alese Kaminski, 6-0, 6-1, and Montrose’s Mia Parry-Emily Birchard, 6-0, 6-0, before knocking out eighth-seeded Faith Kendricks and Gina Mercatili from Valley View, 6-1, 6-0, in the quarterfinals.

Rain and wind moved the second day of the tournament inside.

Pizzano-Scappaticci defeated Scranton Prep’s Camilla Rinaldi-Megan McDonald, the fourth-seeded team, 6-1, 6-3, in the semifinals.

The only Wyoming Area team, Amanda McCormick-Sarah McCormick was beaten in its first match by West Scranton’s Cassandra Moraca-Angelina Moraca, 6-4, 6-1.

Both Pittston Area teams lost in the preliminary round of the District 2-4 Class 3A Subregional.

Hazleton Area’s Alonda Seguara-Sydney Shoemaker defeated Dana Zuba-Kylie Herbert, 6-1, 6-3.

Scranton’s Vrunda Patel-Yashi Patel topped Isabelle Lewis-Krishna Patel, 6-1, 6-3.
