WYOMING — The Wyoming Free Library kicked off the holiday season Dec. 9 with a reading of “The Night before Christmas” by borough mayor Joe Dominick.

Library Director John Roberts said Dominick, his wife and his two daughters come to the library regularly, enjoying both the books and various activities.

“We really enjoy having a community leader visit us,” said Roberts. “And this seemed to be an all around good fit.”

“The kids have been coming to the library since they’ve been in their strollers,” said Jennifer Dominick, referring to Abigail, 8, and Zoey, 7.

Both Dominick sisters, dressed in sparkly white accented by red and green Christmas lights necklaces, seemed to thoroughly enjoy the event, from doing crafts to listening to their father’s reading.

Madelyn Miller, 8, and her brother Kacy, 12, also attended the event, enjoying the reading of the classic Christmas favorite, but also crafts which included the making of a candy cane mouse and personalized stockings.

When the mayor asked the children how they were celebrating the season, the Millers took time to share stories about their “Elf on a Shelf.”

Madelyn Miller said their Elf had recently brought home a girl named “Crystal Snowflake.”

“He didn’t like being alone,” she said.

Both Miller children like to read and paid careful attention as Dominick read.

Board member Rae Anusiewicz assisted the children in the making of Christmas stockings, using felt, cotton and markers.

The simple craft, she said, was enjoyable for children of a variety of ages.

Cathy Talarico, of Pittston, brought her granddaughter Aly Williams, 5, for a fun afternoon with a holiday theme.

Talarico said she especially enjoyed the chance to participate in an indoor activity.

“When my own kids were little, we did things outdoors even in the winter,” she said. “But it’s too cold.”

About 10 children and their parents attended the activity and stayed following the story reading time to continue with craft making, enjoy cookies and juice, and pick out a book or two.

“We enjoy being a resource for the community,” said Roberts, “especially during the holiday season.”
