PITTSTON – A children’s Christmas party held at the American Legion on Dec. 16 provided a chance for area children to celebrate the holiday focused on both family and country.
Bill Timek, of Exeter, said, “The best part for me is knowing that families get to spend time together with veterans. It’s a way of learning about history while having fun.”
Also enjoying the event were three generations of the Prandy family, focusing on 3-year-old Avery, who was especially looking forward to meeting Santa Claus.
Peggy and Barry Prandy, long-time members of the Legion, attended with their son Barry Jr. and his daughter.
Peggy Prandy said the event has become a family tradition, a wonderful way to spend a Saturday just before Christmas indoors, a reprieve from the chill of the outdoors.
Santa Claus, however, seemed unaffected by the rain and cold temperatures as he arrived on a fire truck with a smile, and made his way into the building to the delight of the children
“Seeing Santa is Avery’s favorite part,” said Peggy Prandy.
Leland Hughes, 5, had his Christmas list ready as he made his way to Santa’s lap.
“I want a trumpet, a guitar, a drum,” he said. “I like to make music.”
JoAnn Hunter, president of the Ladies Auxiliary, said the children enjoyed lunch from Wendy’s, several small gifts and a chance to sit on Santa’s lap.
“Wendy’s gave a military discount,” she said.
Legion commander Tom Delaney said, during a season that can be challenging for many, the annual party “celebrates life with the kids.”
Hunter said many of children come to the party for years as participants, then help with the party when they become teenagers.
Suzanne Brenner, 19, said she attended as a youngster and comes back every year.
“They don’t even have to ask,” she said. “I’m here, helping every year.”
