PITTSTON — The city is gearing up for another year of Trick or Treat Main Street filled with tractor rides, costume contests, music and more as dozens of downtown merchants will open their doors and hand out treats.
Downtown Pittston Partnership will sponsor the fifth annual Trick or Treat Main Street on Friday, Oct. 18 from 5 to 8 p.m. It has been estimated over 1,500 children participated in last year’s event.
Brace’s Orchard farm stand will be back again for 2019 as will entertainment by DJ Naro, along with games, a bounce house and costume contests for children and pets.
Tractor rides by Cremard Brothers Excavating will take place, loading and dropping off in the lower Tomato Festival lot.
The Music Scene is sponsoring a “Zombie Dance Party” in the Pocket Park (next to Napoli’s Pizza).
Balloon artist TJ Belt will be at the Pocket Park making free balloon creations for children and the Pittston Area Art Club will offer free face painting.
According to Mary Kroptavich, Pittston’s downtown coordinator, the movie “Hocus Pocus” will play at The Slope Amphitheatre, located behind the Pittston Memorial Library, at 7:30 p.m. Pittston Popcorn will be on hand selling popcorn products during the movie.
Sarah Donahue, coordinator for Trick or Treat Main Street since its inception, teams up with Kroptavich. Kerri Walsh and Pittston City District Coordinator Greg Holl have also been instrumental in planning and setting up the event, Donahue said.
“It’s a happy night out for children and families,” Donahue said. “Having a free night out and having the children wear their costumes so proudly and make memories in a downtown that I did not have when I was growing up. I hope it’s a fun night out and we have ours before Halloween so that children can enjoy trick or treat in their own neighborhoods. It’s a perfect night.”
Trick or Treat Main Street has been growing each year and Pittston Mayor Michael Lombardo said he’s happy with the event with more room to grow even more.
“I give 100% accolades to people like Sarah that have donated their time being volunteer coordinators,” Lombard said. “I like to push the envelope so there’s a lot more we can do with Trick or Treat Main Street.”
“It’s great to see the event grow each year,” Donahue said. “Each year, we keep adding more businesses and this year we’re on par with having the same amount of businesses participating but we are still a week away so we may have more by then.”
Each year Donahue dresses as Snow White, a role she loves.
“I love taking on the role of Snow White for the night,” Donahue admitted. “My favorite part of the night is just kids in their costumes and what they chose.”
“I’m excited about participating in my first Trick or Treat Main Street as Pittston’s downtown coordinator,” Kroptavich said. “I know it’s going to be a ‘spooktacular’ night.”
