EXETER — The West Pittston Library held its largest fundraiser of the year where well over 100 friends and fans of the library attended the first-ever Books and Brews event at Sabatini’s Bottleshop and Bar Thursday evening. The event was sponsored by the Friends of the West Pittston Library organization.

“The Friends is used to doing a wine-tasting as a fundraiser for the library and then wanted to try something new,” said West Pittston Library Director Dave Bauman. “We’ve had such a good response and we’ve had people call to buy tickets for their parents’ anniversary to hear Jack Brogan perform.”

Brogan played saxophone and sang along with pianist and singer Frank Gagliordi as the two performed tunes from Frank Sinatra to Paul Anka.

The $25 admission ticket included a beverage and Sabatini’s pizza.

Every table available in the dining room was filled and pizza was served in a back room of the bottleshop.

“The West Pittston Library is a huge asset of the community and I’m here to support it,” said West Pittston resident John Bubul.

There were plenty of raffle baskets offered as well as 50-50 tickets sold for additional funds raised.

“It’s great to be out and I’m a 100% supporter of the library,” George Miller said. “It’s a great night out.” Miller enjoyed the evening his wife Lois and son Eddie, all of West Pittston.

The West Pittston Library was founded on Sept. 12, 1873 and is one of the oldest libraries in the state. It was originally known as the Pittston Library Association and was located at the Pittston Post Office on Main Street in Pittston.

After a few location changes, the library moved to West Pittston in 1899, settling at its present location in 1924.

It has survived two destructive floods in 1972 (Hurricane Agnes) and 2011 (Tropical Storm Lee).
