PLAINS TWP. – Steve Dressler singled home Rob McClay for the winning run with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning Friday night to lift Plains to a 2-1 victory over Mountain Post in its Wyoming Valley League Senior American Legion baseball opener.

Dressler drove in both of his team’s runs. His fifth-inning RBI broke a scoreless tie.

Each team managed just two hits.

Danny Constantino worked six-plus innings, allowing only an unearned run in the seventh inning for Plains. He walked five and struck out five.

Adam Giavonelli got the last three outs, giving up just one hit, to get the win.

Kyle Turonis had the other hit for Plains.

Plains had three earlier potential season openers postponed.

Youth Legion

Greater Pittston improved to 6-0 in Youth Legion – referred to by some as Junior Legion – with three more wins.

After two dominant efforts earlier in the week, Greater Pittston got past Swoyersville, 5-3, Friday with the help of five strong innings of relief by winning pitcher Steven Yordy.

Matt Silinskie had two doubles and C.J. Pisack added one in the win.

Earlier, Greater Pittston defeated Nanticoke, 8-0, May 30 and Back Mountain, 10-1, Wednesday.

Dylan Melberger pitched six scoreless innings and Kyle McAndrew worked the seventh to complete the shutout of Nanticoke.

Matt Wright, who scored three runs, and Mike Bonita had two hits each.

Wright, who had worked six scoreless innings in a 3-1 victory over Mountain Post in his previous outing, got another pitching win against Back Mountain. He struck out nine in five innings while allowing a run on three hits.

Yordy pitched the final two innings.

Greater Pittston managed 15 hits, including at least two each from Wright, Silinskie, Dylan Spurlin, Pisack and Bonita.

Plains dropped two games, falling to Back Mountain, 5-1, May 30 and Nanticoke, 3-1, Wednesday.
