Several local police departments joined the Pennsylvania State Police Friday and Saturday as Operation Nighthawk took place, officials say.

State police said Operation Nighthawk, is a unique DUI enforcement initiative, which consisted of an educational component conducted at Penn State – Hazleton.

The family of Trooper Kenton Iwaniec spoke at Penn State – Hazleton. Iwaniec was killed March 27, 2008, by an impaired driver after his shift at Pennsylvania State Police Troop J, Avondale Station.

A large roving operation was initiated both evenings throughout Luzerne County and surrounding areas netting 50 DUI arrests, 18 drug arrests, one underage drinking arrest and 193 separate traffic citations.

Overall, state police said 461 motorists were contacted.

The effort was coordinated and assisted by Wilkes-Barre city police and Commonwealth Health. Other local agencies joining the state police were Forty Fort, Kingston Township, Nanticoke, Newport Township, Wilkes-Barre and White Haven police.
