WEST PITTSTON – The 2020 West Pittston Cherry Blossom Festival may not be held this year, but the program awarding a Wyoming Area senior residing in West Pittston a college scholarship continues.

Selena Forlenza will receive the 2020 scholarship despite the festival being cancelled due to COVID-19.

“I want to express my sincerest gratitude and thanks for appointing me with the honor of receiving the West Pittston Cherry Blossom Scholarship,” Forlenza said. “I have lived in West Pittston my entire life and receiving this award is truly an honor.”

Forlenza, the daughter of Albert and Gina Forlenza, played volleyball at Wyoming Area over the last four-years describing playing as a wondrous experience as she became more passionate each year she played.

“Investing my time in playing the sport was one of the best decisions I have made and am truly thankful my mother told me to attend a practice in my freshman year,” Forlenza added.

Forlenza is looking to pursue her interests in Film/Communication Arts and Graphic Design at either Marywood University or Ithaca College.

“Both are strong schools for my interests, and I believe with whatever outcome I choose, I will strive to become successful in the end,” Forlenza said. “I love to create new pieces of artwork as it is one of my favorite hobbies. Reading is also a huge factor in my life, and I always make time to read something new.”

Forlenza was looking forward to participating in the 2020 Cherry Blossom Festival where she has been volunteering at the Boy Scout food stand.

“I’m disappointed I didn’t get to do a lot of things my senior year because of the virus, including the Cherry Blossom Festival,” Forlenza expressed. “I hope everyone is staying safe and healthy during these unfortunate times.”
