YATESVILLE — Illegal drug problems and overdoses are not common at Pittston Area School District, and school board members took steps this week to keep it that way, possibly preventing a future tragedy.

At their monthly meeting on Tuesday, school board members approved a new Narcan policy in which school nurses will be given access to the potentially life-saving substance and be trained on how to administer it. Narcan, also known as naloxone, has the ability in some cases to block or reverse the effects of opioid medication or other narcotic overdoses.

School board president Kent Bratlee said it is a new policy, and that’s it’s for the safety of the students. “It’ll save somebody’s life,” he said. “If somebody has a drug overdose in school, that drug can save them.”
