The Wyoming Valley could see some severe storms as a cold front moves into the region on Wednesday.

According to a hazardous weather outlook issued by the National Weather Service, a strong cold front will bring showers and scattered thunderstorms on Wednesday afternoon and into early Wednesday night. Some thunderstorms could be severe with damaging winds and heavy rainfall.

There is still some uncertainty with the severe weather potential, but the best chance for the severe weather is in Northeastern Pennsylvania up to southern New York.

No watches or warnings have been issued for Luzerne or Lackawanna counties.

The forecast

The National Weather Service indicated it was 40 degrees as of 6:54 a.m. at the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton International Airport, and overcast skies were reported.

Clouds are expected to increase today, and there will be a 30 percent chance of showers after 5 p.m. Less than a tenth of an inch of rain is expected, and the high will be near 61.

Showers are likely between 8 p.m. and midnight tonight, and up to a quarter of an inch of rainfall is expected. Tonight’s low will be around 55.

Showers and thunderstorms are likely on Wednesday. Some thunderstorms could be severe and produce damaging winds and heavy rain. Up to a half an inch of total rainfall is possible. Wednesday’s high will be near 73.

Wednesday night will once again bring showers and thunderstorms before 1 a.m., followed by a slight chance of showers between 1 a.m. and 2 a.m. Some storms could be severe, and up to a quarter of an inch of total rainfall is expected. The low will be around 36.

Partly sunny skies will return on Thursday, with a high near 41.

Partly cloudy skies are predicted for Thursday night, along with a 30 percent chance of snow. The low will be around 26.
